摘要:
We present data and preliminary results of the 1986 Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere (PASSCAL) Basin and Range Lithospheric Seismic Experiment. This prototypical unified seismic experiment contained both active and passive elements: coincident reflection and three‐component refraction data, earthquakes from the 1986 Chalfant, Calif., aftershock sequence, and a nuclear explosion were recorded. Our primary scientific goal is an integrated analysis of these data by a variety of interpretational techniques to improve our understanding of the composition and tectonics of the northwestern Basin and Range province, a major continental rift zone. Secondary seismological objectives included strong ground motion studies, a comparison of Vibroseis™ and explosion sources, and a study of the influence of shot size on frequency content. The data are of high quality and provide detailed information on the structure and velocity distribution of the lithosph

摘要:
Writing endorsements of university promotions is getting way out of hand. I have been getting quite specific and demanding requests for opinions of individuals. The following letter is a recent instance of the kind of response I was forced to give:Dear Prof. Smith: Thank you for your letter of 25 January asking my opinion of Assoc. Research Scientist M. King Doe. I would, of course, be happy to provide a frank assessment of Dr. Doe's capabilities since I have known him for over six weeks — ever since we were trapped together in the Cathedral Hills Hotel elevator in Decembe

摘要:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting proposals for projects designed to improve middle school science education. This solicitation is part of an ongoing program administered by the NSF's Division of Materials Development, Research, and Informal Science Education. Seven grants were made in 1986 and 1987 to support projects aimed at elementary school science education. Each of these projects represented the joint efforts of scientists, publishers, and school systems. The publishers provided a large part of the investment capital, the school systems provided testing grounds for the teaching materials, and the scientists assessed the quality of the science being taught.

摘要:
A symposium on the contributions of geophysics to climate change studies was held at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) 19th General Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, during August 1987. The principal aim of this symposium was to describe the contributions that have been made by each of the disciplines represented within IUGG to the study of climate change. To present a balanced program, the symposium was composed of invited reviews, but other viewpoints were given during general discussion. The themes that were covered reflected the interests of the seven IUGG Associations; they included volcanism, biogeochemistry, land hydrology, climate modeling (past and present), cryosphere, paleoclimates, land surface processes, tropical oceans and the global atmosphere, clouds and atmospheric radiation, aeronomy and planetary atmospheres, and modeling future climate changes.

摘要:
You can extend your commitment to the continuing vitality of geophysics by helping AGU to build funds that will provide for new initiatives and assist in funding some of the nonrevenue programs of AGU, such as the congressional science fellowship, minority student scholarships, and student travel grants. The AGU Development Committee is seeking gifts and contributions toward building the endowment of the Union: The vitality of AGU and the vitality of geophysics march hand in hand.Four categories of supporting membership are offered by the Union: Individual Supporting Member $80 per year Life Supporting Member $1,500 Sustaining Member $5,000 Benefactor $10,000 Benefactors, Sustaining, and Life Supporting Members pay no further dues.
