摘要:
Topical meetings permit organized and in‐depth exploration of specialized subjects in a manner seldom possible at the large annual meetings; they encourage interdisciplinary focus on special problems in a way that is inhibited by the multi‐session format of the annual meetings. They also can provide timely encouragement to the development of newly emerging research fields and problem areas. The limited size facilitates informal discussions and subsequent further communication among workers and students in related but separate fields. Recognizing the importance of these topical meetings and the tremendous pervasive contributions of Sydney Chapman to our disciplines, the Council designated that future AGU topical meetings should be called Chapman Conferen

摘要:
The Chapman Conferences are intended to promote scientific progress in the numerous areas of the physical sciences encompassed by the American Geophysical Union. The conferences are named in memory of Sydney Chapman, 1888–1970, who in his distinguished career made significant discoveries in many disciplines, including earth and atmospheric science; ionospheric, magnetospheric, interplanetary, and solar physics; and more. Chapman approached the ideal in grasping the unity of nature, in yielding to empirical requirements, in applying basic principles freely and successfully across traditional disciplinary lines, and in his piercing analytical abilit

摘要:
A visit to China of an American seismological delegation, which took place October 5 to November 5, 1974, is covered in this report. The Americans were sponsored by the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China (CSCPRC), and the hosts in China were the Scientific and Technical Association and the State Seismological Bureau. The CSCPRC is sponsored jointly by the National Academy of Sciences, the Social Science Research Council, and the American Council of Learned Societies. The visit had its origins in an invitation extended in January 1973 by Carl Kisslinger, as President of the Seismological Society of America, to the Chinese Academy of Sciences to send representatives to a Symposium on Earthquake Prediction Research. Although the Chinese declined to participate, this invitation was one step towards a reciprocal exchange of seismologists between the United States and the People's Republic of China. Several months after Kisslinger's letter the CSCPRC visited Peking. Their purpose was to arrange an exchange program with the Chinese Scientific and Technical Association. Prompted by Kisslinger, the committee's proposals for American delegations included seismology. Not only was this particular exchange accepted, but the Chinese in turn suggested that a Chinese seismology group visit the United States.

摘要:
The U.S. Geological Survey has established an extramural program as part of its Geothermal Research Program. Organizations interested in submitting proposals for geothermal research contracts or for grant assistance in FY1976 may request information concerning proposal preparation and submission from Contracting Officer, U.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Procurement and Contracts, Mail Stop 205A, National Center, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, Virginia 22092.Requests for an information brochure will be honored on a firstcome first‐served basis. Quantities of the brochure are limited; therefore, it is important to make requests early. Brochures will be ready for release on October 6, 197

摘要:
Sessions on Underwater Acoustics in Ocean Science are being planned for the Spring Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, Washington, D.C., April 5–9, 1976. The special sessions, which will be held just prior to the Washington Spring Meeting of AGU, will include invited and contributed papers in the areas of remote acoustical sensing and probing of the ocean volume, surface, bottom, and sub‐bottom. For information about submitting abstracts see “Acoustical News‐USA” in any recent issue of the Journal of the Acoustical Society o

摘要:
Following the AGU International Conference on the Nature of the Oceanic Crust, at the Sea Lodge, in La Jolla Shores, December 4–6, 1975, a two part ophiolite field trip is planned. Part one of the field trip will leave La Jolla after dinner on December 6 by bus for Santa Barbara, arriving late evening. Participants will be housed close to the Point Sal area and will have a full day in the field on Sunday. The leader for this part of the trip will be Cliff Hopso

摘要:
Global snow and ice cover are significant factors in the seasonal and long‐term water balance equations on worldwide and regional scales. Snow and ice also have a strong influence on climatic conditions, or more properly, they reflect climatic change. Each year, between a fifth and a quarter of the earth's surface is covered by snow, and nearly 80% of the earth's fresh water supply is in temporary storage in the snow and ice masses that cover land surface alone. Seasonal snow cover represents a much smaller portion of the fresh water supply, but locally it is critical. For example, the Colorado River derives 90% of its flow from snowmel

摘要:
The Eighteenth Cospar Meeting and Symposia were held from May 29 to June 7, 1975, in the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria, at the invitation of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The meeting was under the patronage of Stanko Todorov, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the People's Republic of Bulgaria.Accommodations for attendees were in Golden Sands, a seaside resort 17 km from Varna. Shuttle bus transportation was furnished between the hotels and the meeting site. The meeting and symposia were attended by 584 individuals from 36 countries, and more than 400 papers were presented at the open working group sessions, the panels, and the symposia.

摘要:
The 1975 Spring Annual Meeting was held June 16–19, 1975, at the Sheraton‐Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. During the four‐day meeting approximately 1100 papers were presented, down from over 1400 last year. Total registration was 1939, of whom 1327 were members, 242 were students, and 370 were nonmembers. Last year's registration in April was 2775; however, it is believed that several factors other than the move from April to June influenced the smaller meeting this year: the economic situation, the restrictions on travel by government and industry alike, the upcoming 16th General Assembly of IUGG, and the First Annual Meeting of the Midwestern Region o

摘要:
Teddy Bullard has played a leading role in the geophysical drama of our lifetime: the story of plate tectonics. After graduating in physics from Cambridge University and continuing at the Cavendish Laboratory under Rutherford, Teddy was appointed a Demonstrator in Geodesy by Lenox‐Conyngham. This resulted in his earliest work, measurements of gravity over the African Rift Valley. Bullard showed that the East African Rift is not a subsidence feature, but instead is a manifestation of the emplacement of dense mantle material close to the surface. Hence Bullard showed that the rift zone was in fact a sundering of the continent. This was significant evidence of convective motions in the earth's interio
