The Western Pacific is strewn with chains and clusters of seamounts, many of which are now flat‐topped submarine seamounts, or guyots, with summit depths of about 1500 m. Many guyots are capped by shallow‐water carbonate platform sediments overlying volcanic substrate. Guyot sediments can serve as “dip sticks” to monitor subsidence rates and relative changes in sea level for times when upward carbonate‐platform growth occurred during tectonic subsidence of their foundations. Such sediments encode the timing and sense of sea‐level rises and falls in their mineralogy, textures, and fossils. GE 203 Since 1987, there has been a drop of about 40% in the purchasing power of research libraries in the amount of material they can buy today compared with what could be purchased in 1987. This drop varies from one area to another; it is estimated to be 60% for the physical sciences and engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. During this time, the materials' acquisition budgets of most libraries have been held at roughly the same dollar level. Software that allows remote users to browse satellite‐derived images and in‐situ data archives of interest to oceanographers via Internet has been developed by researchers at the University of Rhode Island/s Graduate School of Oceanography. The tool, called “Xbrowse,” can access a recently assembled archive of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) imagery covering the Western Atlantic from 1979 to present, with new passes being added daily. From January 1979 through March 1982, the coverage is spotty. From April 1982 to present, every pass downloaded on the Wallops Island receiving station is available. It is imperative that the Earth‐sciences community engage an educational mission with the same vigor that we pursue other scholarly endeavors; otherwise, we are in danger of eating our own seed corn. A common public perception exists that the Earth sciences are “soft sciences” compared with other physical and life sciences. This may be due in part to the interdisciplinary nature of our many activities. However, it is in this broad‐based approach that our collective strength lies, particularly as we apply the “pure” sciences to complex natural systems.
