摘要:
Global change studies will have increased support in Fiscal Year 1991 if Congress accepts the budget that President George Bush sent to Capitol Hill January 29. Global change research by federal agencies would receive 57% more money, from $659 million in FY 1990 to $1,034 billion in FY 1991.FY 1991 highlights of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, which was announced as a Presidential Initiative in January 1989, were reviewed January 29 at a news briefing in Washington, D.C., by the Committee on Earth Sciences of the Federal Coordinating Council for Science, Engineering and Technology. The committee advises the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Executive Office of the President.

摘要:
The magnitude‐7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake, which ruptured a segment of the San Andreas fault on October 17, 1989, and caused extensive damage over a large area of central California, also produced substantial motions in nearby Monterey Bay (Figure 1). Earthquake effects included a tsunami, or seismic sea wave, and subsequent surface water oscillations that were detected for about 24 hours following the main shock and widespread, substantial slumping of sediments on the Monterey Bay continental shelf and along the walls of Monterey Submarine Canyo

摘要:
The AGU 1989 Fall Meeting was held December 4–8 in San Francisco with meeting participation continuing the steady growth trend set throughout the decade. More than 4618 members registered at the meeting and 3300 papers were given.West Coast geophysical awareness had been heightened earlier in the fall by the magnitude‐7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurred October 17 just south of San Francisco. This event provided a topical accent for parts of the week's program. A Monday Union session was devoted to initial results from, and reaction to, the earthquake. The session was concluded by a address by U.S. Representative George E. Brown, Jr. (D‐Calif.), sponsor of the earthquake hazard reduction bill presently funding much of the earthquake hazards reduction program in th

摘要:
This note is call for dive requests, coordinated to the extent practical, from those scientists interested in opportunities for anAlvin/Atlantis IIexpedition to some remote area. In an effort to facilitate planning forAlvinand to help focus the attention of investigators with diverse scientific interests in remote areas, Feenan Jennings of Texas A&M University, College Station, who chairs the University‐National Oceanographic Laboratory System's (UNOLS')AlvinReview Committee (ARC), has announced establishment of anAlvinplanning bulletin board on electronic mail. The bulletin board, ALVIN.PLANNING, is to help inform potential users of community interest in conductingAlvin/Atlantis IIresearch projects, especially those involving expeditions to remote areas. ALVIN.PLANNING will be implemented early in 1990. Notice and further details will be broadcast throughout the ocean communit
