摘要:
Currently, people who document and publish data do so in printed journals, displaying their results in graphical or tabular form. This is an effective way to publicize the existence of validated observations or model results and to present some selected characteristics of the data. However, it is not reasonable to use this medium to exchange the information content of typical geophysical data sets for others to study. In many cases a calibrated, documented data set itself is the important contribution of a scientific investigation.

摘要:
The present and future state of geophysics was the subject of five wide‐ranging talks at “Frontiers of Geophysics,” a Union session held May 18 at the AGU Spring Meeting in Baltimore, Md.Scientists have suspected for many years that solar radiation controls aspects of Earth's climate. An up‐to‐date look at this old scientific problem led off the session. John Imbrie of Brown University (Providence, R.I.) talked about climatic effects of variations in Earth's orbital elements, better known as Milankovitch cycles. Three components of Earth's astronomical motion contribute to the amount of solar energy that reaches Earth: the obliquity or tilt of the rotation axis, its conical wobble or precession, and the eccentricity of Earth's orbit. The periods of these orbital elements vary from 23,000 years for precession to ∼100,000 years for eccentricity. The Milankovitch theory has now been tested against a rapidly growing mountain of climate and paleoclimate data and applied to t h e recurrence of ice ages and othe

摘要:
It is an honor for me, and a pleasure, to present to you Marcia McNutt as a Macelwane medalist for 1988. McNutt is a tectonophysicist, best known for her work on the thermal and mechanical properties of the lithosphere and the nature of isostatic compensation beneath the oceans and continents. Large topographic loads with horizontal scale lengths from a few tens to hundreds of kilometers are a rich source of information about the dynamical properties of Earth's outer layers. Although such features have been studied for more than a century, it has only been within the last decade, in large measure through the work of McNutt and her colleagues, that the quantitative modeling of loading phenomena has elucidated the physics of lithospheric deformation and the nature of lithospheric interactions with the convecting mantle. This Macelwane Medal recognizes her achievements in this important area of tectonophysics.

摘要:
The 1988 AGU Spring Meeting attracted more journalists than ever before. Representatives from 12 magazines, 5 newspapers, 2 wire services, and a TV station used the press room and attended the 6 news conferences. The journalists were attracted to the meeting, held May 16‐in Baltimore, Md., by 6 press releases mailed out by the AGU public information staff in the 2 months before the meeting. Correspondents from as far as Sweden and Japan joined U.S. reporters from San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C. and Baltimor
