At 1532 UT on May 18, 1980, the major eruption of the Mount St. Helens volcano occurred. Magnetic perturbations were observed subsequently at five of the seven magnetometer stations: Newport, Washington (NEW); Rapid City, South Dakota (RPC); Camp Douglas, Wisconsin (CDS); Mt. Clemens, Michigan (MCL); and Lompoc, California (LOC), all of the U.S. Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) magnetometer chain [Knecht et al.,1979]. Perturbations were also observed at the standard magnetic observatories: Sitka, Alaska (SIT); Newport, Washington (NEW); Boulder, Colorado (BOU); Tucson, Arizona (TUC); and Victoria, Canada (VIC).No perturbations were observed at the more distant stations: Sudbury, Massachusetts (SUB); Tampa, Florida (TPA); Fredericksburg, Virginia (FRB); or Honolulu, Hawaii (HON). Figure 1 shows the location of Mount St. Helens and of the magnetic observatories from which data were available. The farthest station which observed the event was Mt. Clemens, at 3122 km, and the closest station that did not observe the event was Fredericksburg, at 3753 km. Thus the limit of magnetic detectability is about 3400±300 km

NASA has selected the Space and Communications Group of Hughes Aircraft Co. for work on an estimated $40 million contract for the Galileo probe carrier spacecraft. The work will be performed at Hughes' facilities in El Segundo, California.The carrier will transport the Galileo probe to Jupiter, where the probe will separate and enter Jupiter's atmosphere. It will measure the atmosphere for an hour down to a level where atmospheric pressure is 10 times Earth's surface pressure.

As a model of cooperation in the solution of global geophysical problems the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) has set a standard at the highest level. The data collection phase of the IMS, 1976–1979, involved about 50 nations; over 1000 experiments which used satellites, rockets, balloons, and ground bases; and engaged over 10,000 scientists. The magnetosphere is such a huge object that only the combined efforts of many nations can be expected to solve its complexities in a reasonable period of time.Many regional symposia on IMS results have been held during the last few years. The first major one was held at La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia from November 27 to December 1, 1979. The meeting was cosponsored by the Scientific Committee on Solar‐Terrestrial Physics (Scostep) and the International Association on Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (LAGA) and was held as part of the 17th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics.
