摘要:
Nominating committees for each of the sections and for the union are now beginning their work. For the union a president‐elect, general secretary, and foreign secretary must be elected. The president‐elect will serve in that capacity for the July 1, 1976, through June 30, 1978, term and as president for the following two‐year term. The term of the general secretary is two years and that of the foreign secretary four years; the incumbents are eligible for reelection to these two positions. The union nominating committee is C.B. Raleigh, chairman, M.B. McElroy, and R.A. Freeze. They would welcome suggestions from the membe

摘要:
Recently I had an interesting and pleasurable but puzzling experience. It was interesting and pleasurable because it involved enthusiastic young people who were considering the possibility of entering upon careers in the earth sciences or their practical application. It was puzzling because I found that the American Geophysical Union had no brochures, booklets, or other background information to offer me to help in preparing for the encounter. The event was a panel discussion sponsored by the International Gem and Mineral Show at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Washington, D.C., this past April. The subject of the discussion was ‘Careers and Opportunities in Geology,’ where the term geology was taken to mean broadly the various earth sciences and their application to practical problems. The program was aimed at the high school students and their teachers and sought to answer for them questions about existing opportunities in the field, which and where are the best colleges and universities at which to study, what would be the nature of the required courses, and what kind of high school preparation would be desirable. The panel consisted of an instructor in meteorology at a nearby community college, a junior high school teacher, an undergraduate college student in geology, and myself, a geophysic

摘要:
This article draws attention to a most remarkable feature on a recently published Bouguer gravity anomaly map of Africa. The map is published by the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency in a technical paper that may not be widely seen, although it was presented at the Spring Annual Meeting of the AGU in 1973. The authors are R.L. Slettene, L.E. Wilcox, R.S. Blouse, and J.R. Sanders [Slettene et al., 1973].The map is on a Mercator projection at a scale of 1:20,000,000. The compilation procedure was completely automated, and only terrestrial data were used. A total of 3073 mean anomaly predictions 1°×1° were incorporated. About 40% of these were computed by various conventional and statistical methods; the remaining 60% were made by geophysical correlation methods. The computer‐generated contours are at 10 mgal intervals for anomalies smaller than −100 mgal and at 20 mgal intervals for anomalies larger than −

摘要:
Experiments have demontrated that computer‐processed satellite images of the earth's surface can be used successfully to locate underground metallic mineral deposits in arid regions, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. In one of two USGS experiments, five copper‐bearing deposits were found in a remote part of Pakistan. The other experiment resulted in developing characteristic ‘signatures’ on satellite images for known mineral deposits in Nevada and demonstrated that such distinctive signatures on space photographs of other areas can be used to discover new mineral d

摘要:
A Penrose Conference on The Lithosphere‐Asthenosphere Boundary will be convened by Thomas H. Jordan and William S. Fyfe at Vail, Colorado, in mid‐November 1975. The tentative dates are November 16 to 21.Many definitions of the lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary exist on the basis of various geodetic, seismological, penological, and rheological data or phenomena. This ambiguity has resulted in confusion and misinterpretation of the part of students of earth dyn

摘要:
Under the U.S.‐USSR Joint Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection of May 1972, a program entitled Earthquake Prediction was begun. During 1973, working groups were organized on each side, with M.A. Sadovskiy of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Institute of Physics of the Earth, and R.E. Wallace, U.S. Geological Survey, as cochairmen. A plan for cooperative working projects was developed, and the first exchanges took place in 197

摘要:
The First International Symposium on Induced Seismicity (ISIS) is being organized by the Institute of Earth and Planetary Physics, University of Alberta, Edmonton, in cooperation with Unesco, the National Research Council of Canada, and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Canada. It will be held at the university on September 15 to 19, 1975.The main concern of the meeting is to focus attention on the problems of adverse induced seismicity associated with engineering activities such as reservoir impounding, fluid injection, and mining excavation, and to identify future research needs related to induced seismicity.

摘要:
Nimbus Instruments' ES‐100 is half the size and is priced at 30% less than existing instruments that have fewer features, say the manufacturers. The improvements in the ES‐100 are made possible through a new design that uses the recent developments in electronic technology. The instrument enhances the displayed wave form by summing the desired signals while averaging out random background noise, thereby providing a clearer, more accurate signal with greater depth penetration. Additional features include a geophone polarity switch for enhancement of shear waves from reversed impacts and controls that allow the wave to be expanded horizontally and vertically, or to be displaced and delayed for detailed examination of particular sections of inter

摘要:
The Twenty‐First Annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Region was held October 17 and 18, 1974, at the Joint Center for Graduate Study in Richland, Washington. Almost 100 registrants participated in the meeting, at which 8 invited reviews and 39 contributed papers were presented. The meeting was highlighted by a special session on Geophysical Aspects of Nuclear Power Production. The moderator, Richard F. Foster of Battelle‐Northwest, introduced the topic. He gave a brief historical sketch of reactor development, defined the various types of power systems in use or planned, and indicated the probable growth pattern of power reactor development in the years ah
