摘要:
Last fall's 3‐month winter weather prediction by National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters was not terrific, but it was not too far off the mark, either. A comparison of the predicted temperatures and precipitation (Eos, December 25, 1984, p. 1241) to the observed conditions (see Figures 1 and 2) during the months of December, January, and February shows that the forecasters were generally correct where they were most confident in their predictions.According to Donald Gilman, chief of the Predictions Branch at NWS's National Climate Analysis Center, the overall temperature forecast was probably better than that for precipitation. “The temperature forecast was pretty good in the West,” said Gilman. “East of the Mississippi, however, was a mixed p

摘要:
During the 1984 field season, two research holes were cored into the Inyo chain of young rhyolite domes, which cuts across the northwest margin of Long Valley Caldera, Calif. (Figure 1). One hole slanted under the vent of Obsidian Dome and completely penetrated the conduit of the volcano. It was spudded on August 16 and reached its final depth on September 9. The second hole was sited along Glass Creek between Obsidian Dome and the next dome to the south; it intersected the rhyolite dike which underlies the chain. It was spudded on September 18 and reached final depth on October 28.

摘要:
I am pleased to report that the VGP section is alive, well, and growing. We are the second fastest‐growing section in the Union and our membership is increasing at a rate 75% above that of the Union as a whole. During the 4 years from December of 1979 to December of 1983 the membership of the section grew from 1178 to 1819, an increase of 54.4%. For comparison, Union membership during the same period increased by 31%. The growth of VGP was exceeded only by the Tectonophysics Section, which grew 61%. Of the total AGU membership, 11.0% have chosen to affiliate with VGP, up from 9.4% since 197
