A special issue of Physics Today devoted to geophysics is to be published by the American Institute of Physics in March 1974. The AIP has offered to send this issue to all members of AGU. I hope each member will find something interesting in the issue. We can all be pleased that our research is attracting such attention in the physics community.

The Council of the American Geophysical Union has approved the creation of a new monthly journal,Geophysical Research Letters. The new periodical fills a void in AGU's program. We have good coverage of many facets of geophysics but have not had a medium especially designed for fast publication of short communications.

From June 30 to July 18, 1973, I visited the People's Republic of China as guest lecturer of the Academia Sinica. The invitation had been extended in 1972 by Ku Kunghsu, acting director of the Geophysical Institute of Academia Sinica, Peking (see Figure 1). In the last decade, unfortunately, little information has been available in the English language scientific literature on geophysical and geological research and teaching in China [Tsu, 1972;Wilson, 1972;Chao, 1973]. The main concern of my trip was seismological research.

The determination of the geoid has been one of the prime goals of geodesy. Knowledge of geoid undulations with respect to some reference surface was needed for the determination of the figure of the earth, for the precise reduction of distance measurements to a reference ellipsoid, and for the determination of the geocentric location of points on the surface of the earth. Currently and in the future, undulation information can also be used in geophysical studies related to crustal structures and in oceanographic studies related to sea surface topography. The actual determination of global geoids has been carried out by using gravimetric data, satellite‐derived information related to the gravitational field of the earth, or a combination of the two techniques. Regional geoid determinations have been made by astrogeodetic techniques. For some applications of undulation information, undulation standard deviations of the order of ±5 m would be sufficient. Such an accuracy can be obtained by using data currently available. The Fourth Geodesy/Earth and Ocean Physics (GEOP) Research Conference was held on August 16 and 17, 1973, at the University of Colorado, Boulder. It was attended by about 65 persons. John Apel, general chairman, opened the conference, followed by Richard H. Rapp of the Ohio State University, who delivered the keynote address. The keynote address in its entirety is printed elsewhere in this issue. This address and the following summaries of the sessions constitute a report on this conference.

Paul J. Melchior is the new secretary general of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. An arrangement was approved at the General Assembly of 1971 by which Melchior would succeed George D. Garland in that office at a convenient time. The changeover was confirmed in a recent meeting of the IUGG executive committee.

A laboratory dedicated to studying the oceans from satellites, aircraft, and other remote platforms has been created in Miami, Florida, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.The new Ocean Remote Sensing Laboratory will be one of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories (part of NOAA's Environmental Research Laboratories, with headquarters in Boulder, Colorado), which occupy a major oceanographic research facility on Virginia Key near Miami.

Graduate study programs in remote sensing of coastal resources and environment have been established in the College of Marine Studies at the University of Delaware.Currently six students are working toward M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, performing basic and applied research in interdisciplinary areas such as mapping coastal vegetation, land use, current circulation, and water properties. Satellites, aircraft, helicopters, and boats are used in the student research.

Scientists of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have found evidence indicating that hurricanes may not be all bad.The cold sea surface temperature wake left by some hurricanes may be beneficial in certain areas, according to researchers of the National Hurricane Research Laboratory and the Research Flight Facility, units of the NOAA Environmental Research Laboratories based in Miami, Florida.
