摘要:
The international network of six incoherent scatter radars follows a program of coordinated observations on the prescheduled monthly World Days. Common mode experiments are used both to provide a continuing data set of synoptic ionospheric parameters on a near‐global scale and to collect simultaneous data with wide‐latitude and local time coverage for use in addressing specific topics of concern to the upper atmospheric research community. Processed data are made readily available through the incoherent scatter data base at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colo. This paper discusses the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Millstone Hill Radar contributions to this rapidly accumulating ionospheric data resou

摘要:
Ground‐based explosions have been exploited successfully in the past as a relatively controlled source for producing ionospheric disturbances. On June 25, the Defense Nuclear Agency will conduct a high explosives test on the northern section of the White Sands Missile Range. Approximately 4,800 tons of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) will be detonated at ground level, producing an acoustic shock wave with a surface pressure change of approximately 20 mbar at a 6 km range. This shock front will have sufficient strength to propagate into the ionosphere with at least a 10% change in the ambient pressure across the disturbance front in the lowerFregion. Such an ionospheric perturbation will give ionospheric researchers an excellent opportunity to investigate acoustic propagation at ionospheric heights, shock dissipation effect, the ion‐neutral coupling process, acoustic‐gravity wave (traveling ionospheric disturbance) generation mechanisms, and associated RF phen

摘要:
The Centre for Remote Sensing was founded at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, in London, in 1983 to serve as a focus for the teaching and research activities on remote sensing at the college. The interests at Imperial College cover a wide range of disciplines including earth resources, land use, geology, atmospheric physics, oceanography and planetary studies. There are also major activities in a number of image processing applications in scientific topics and industrial problems, which has led to a major interest in pattern recognition.

摘要:
At its December meeting, the AGU Executive Committee recommended that AGU apply for membership in the American Institute of Physics (AIP). The Council approved this action and a formal application was submitted to AIP in February. At its March 16 meeting, the AIP Governing Board unanimously recommended to its member societies that AGU become a member of the Institute. This is the first step in a year‐long process. Now the councils of each of the AIP member societies, including the American Physical Society, the American Astronomical Society, the Optical Society of America, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and five others, must each approve AGU membership in the Institute. Finally, the AIP Corporation must formally accept those votes to effect the new membershi
