摘要:
Many geophysicists are professionally interested in environmental matters and hence followed the preparations for and the conduct of the Stockholm Conference. They were aware of broad international activity in advance of the conference. Some have expressed disappointment that U.S. geophysicists generally were not more broadly involved in the preparations.Published accounts of the Stockholm Conference did little to increase the prestige of the occasion. From this side of the water Stockholm seemed like a rather dull show. True there were histrionics at some of the plenary sessions, but much of the propaganda and self‐serving statements were stale or ridiculou

摘要:
Spectacular sunsets are seen over much of the world following violent volcanic eruptions, and the brilliant displays may occur for many years (Figure 1). Especially noteworthy were those following the eruption of Krakatoa in the East Indies in 1883 and of Gunung Agung in Bali in 1963. The optical effects result from the scattering of sunlight by fine volcanic particles. Other recent eruptions that have been shown to inject particles—volcanic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and sulphur dioxide which by chemical reactions form particles—and entrained air into the stratosphere include Awu in 1966 and Fernandia in 1968. Of course there are small, but not zero, concentrations of particles in the stratosphere even following prolonged periods of little volcanic activity. These particles come from many sources, as discussed later in this arti

摘要:
In February, a Soviet automatic geologist made a soft landing in a mountainous continental area of the moon and took samples of rocks. Academician Alexander Vinogradov describes the results of the investigation of the rock delivered to the earth by the Luna 20 probe.

摘要:
The U.S. Geological Survey has established, for overall administrative purposes, three regions each of which encompasses approximately onethird of the nation. The three regions, Eastern, Central, and Western, will replace the four regions previously maintained by the Geological Survey. Each of the three regions will include several of President Nixon's ten administrative regions and have common boundaries with them.

摘要:
An array of instruments designed to provide uniquely useful data on earthquakes and their effects in the San Francisco Bay area has been completed. Developed by geophysicists in the Seismological Field Survey (of the Boulder, Colorado‐based Earth Sciences Laboratories, one of NOAA's Environmental Research Laboratories), the new array is among the most comprehensive strong‐motion recording systems now in use.The APEEL (Andreas‐Peninsula Earthquake Engineering Laboratory) array is positioned along a 20‐mile line running roughly northeastward some 20 miles south of San Francisco. The array crosses the San Andreas Fault, San Francisco Bay, and the Hayward Fault. Strong‐motion accelerographs are installed at 15 locations along the line, interspersed with other seismic instruments, seismographs, and seismoscopes, to record data from any future damaging earthquakes in

摘要:
Project Stormfury hurricane research and modification plans for 1972 were announced recently. The project will be in effect through October 31, awaiting the opportunity to seed hurricanes in an attempt to diminish their force.Project Stormfury is a joint Department of Commerce/Department of Defense program of scientific experiments to explore the nature of tropical storms and hurricanes, and to investigate the possibility of modifying them. Gulf of Mexico, when the probability is small that the hurricane center will come within 50 miles of a populated area within 18 hours after seeding.

摘要:
Hasselblad has made a commercial version of the Data camera with Keseau‐plate. The Hasselblad MK 70 is suitable for a wide variety of photogrammetric applications. Because the Hasselblad system includes interchangeable film magazines, the MK 70 magazines can be loaded with various types of films. The compactness of this easy‐to‐use, 2 1/4 inch format camera makes the Hasselblad cluster possible. A cluster consists of four Hasselblads, each loaded with different types of film, positioned to take identical pictures and to go off simultaneously. The Hasselblad cluster has been successful in aerial and infrared photography. In addition to aerial photography, the MK 70 can be used for photographic applications in applied engineering, construction, and continuous recording of construction
