摘要:
Are scientists as a group getting older? Between 1960 and April 1986 the median age of the U.S. population increased by 1 year to 30.5 years [Bureau of the Census, 1982, 1986]. But active, publishing U.S. geophysicists are aging much faster. Three years ago, I reported inEos[Gillmor, 1984] that a sample of about 300 active American Geophysical Union (AGU) members with U.S. addresses who had published in theJournal of Geophysical Research(JGR) in 1983 was almost 4 years older than a similar sample drawn from 1978.The reason that I chose U.S. authors who were publishing in JGR and who were members of AGU for my study was that JGR is the world's leading geophysics journal and AGU is one of a few scientific organizations with relatively good birth year information for its members going back for many years. With the kind assistance of AGU staff, I examined AGU records to determine which authors giving U.S. or Canadian addresses in my samples were AGU members in 1986, which then allowed me to locate birth years for nearly all of those members.

摘要:
On September 5, 1987, Voyagers 1 and 2 kept moving at 15 km/s or so, something they have been doing well for a decade. Last month the Voyager mission marked its 10th anniversary of planetary exploration, as well as the fact that the two spacecraft already traveled nearly 4 billion miles (∼6 billion km) each. On the way they have provided a staggering amount of information about the outer planets in the Solar System, and their work is not yet finished. Soon Voyager 1 will rocket out of the solar system, its instruments in search of the heliopause, the end of the solar wind, and Voyager 2 will be propelled from its recent encounter with Uranus toward a polar flyby of Neptune in August 198

摘要:
H. W. Menard died on February 9, 1986. His professional legacy includes much of his scientific work in unearthing the floor of the Pacific Ocean, his former students, and his work in the history of science. In addition to his earlier endeavor into the history and sociology of science,Science Growth and Change(Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1971), Menard leaves usThe Ocean of Truth. Unable to stop himself from doing research, he corrected the galley proofs forThe Ocean of Truthduring the last days of his life, in his hospital bed, while dying of cancer. I include Menard's work in the history of science within his professional legacy, since Menard did not approach the history of science as a retired scientist who decides to write, with memory as his only guide, about his and his fellow scientists' research. The Ocean of Truthis a serious and successful attempt to recount the rise of oceanography and its bearing upon the recent revolution in the Earth sciences.

摘要:
A full program of honors and awards recognizes AGU members and other outstanding geophysicists who make significant contributions to geophysical knowledge and understanding. In addition to the presentation of the medals and awards listed below, a select committee annually confers the designation of Fellow on AGU members who have distinguished themselves in geophysics.

摘要:
You can extend your commitment to the continuing vitality of geophysics by helping AGU to build funds that will provide for new initiatives and assist in funding some of the nonrevenue programs of AGU, such as the congressional science fellowship, minority student scholarships, and student travel grants. The AGU Development Committee is seeking gifts and contributions toward building the endowment of the Union: The vitality of AGU and the vitality of geophysics march hand in hand.

摘要:
The American Geophysical Union, which was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and for more than 50 years operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences, is now a corporation chartered under the laws of the District of Columbia. The Union is dedicated to the furtherance of the sciences of geophysics through the individual efforts of its Members and in cooperation with other national and international scientific organizations.

摘要:
In May 1982, the AGU Council approved the following policy on the Union's role in advocacy on public issues. The American Geophysical Union is an association of scientists, scholars, and interested lay public for the purpose of advancing geophysical science. The Union shares a collateral sense of responsibility to assure that the results of geophysical research are made available to benefit all mankind. The Union encourages its members to exercise their individual sense of responsibility in addressing political and social issues. Should they choose to act collectively on such issues, other organizations exist for such purposes. The American Geophysical Union, as a society, should preserve its unique position as an objective source of analysis and commentary for the full spectrum of geophysical science.
