Since snow, rainfall, and glaciers constitute the raw material of much of the Section of Hydrology, and runoff and floods are their results, the Committee on Snow has sought membership from all of these overlapping fields to attain breadth of understanding and the spirit of cooperation. To share the benefits of international cooperation, representatives from Canada have been requested to accept membership. Because of the present pioneer stage of snow‐surveying and the Committee's opportunity to foster its development, representation has also been sought for various watersheds where stream‐development is increasing the public interest in snow.In the following list of members of the Committee the sphere or locality of special interest of each member is represented in parenthesis. The Committee was enlarged during the past year by one more member, Prof. J. E. Church of Reno, Nevada, Chairman of the Committee on Snow, who agreed to serve on it while the Chairman of the Committee on Glaciers in turn accepted membership on the Committee on Snow. Thus the two Committees, whose spheres of work are in some respects intimately related, have been brought into closer touch with each other.Although the Committee on Glaciers has assembled considerable data on different lines of glaciologic research during the past few years, it seems best to confine this report, like the preceding ones, to a record of the variations—advance or recession—of glaciers in the continental United States and Alaska, and to reserve the other data for presentation later, in separate papers. The Chairman of the Committee had been asked to prepare such a chapter and has sought the assistance of the members of the Committee in its preparation. A first draft was sent to the members of the Committee in December, 1936, with a request for criticism. Several carefully prepared and helpful reviews of this draft as well as discussion of the subject of evaporation were received from members of the Committee. A second draft, condensed to the length allotted in the Bulletin for this chapter, is nearly completed. If time permits, it will also be sent to the Committee members for further comment. The current year has been one of great activity in the field of hydrology. This its true not alone of experimental work, but to an even greater extent in the practical application of known facts and principles. Demand for the latter has arisen throughout the United States in the numerous public and semi‐public projects which have been initiated in recent years. Many of these projects involve the conservation and use of water, the protection and prevention from floods, and the disturbing effects which large improvements often have upon the natural hydrologic balances. Since the last meeting of the Section of Hydrology there has been a change in the organization and membership of some of the research‐committees, one relating to rainfall, of which Merrill Bernard is Chairman, and one relating to runoff, were created to replace the one committee which had functioned heretofore on both rainfall and runoff. This action by the officers provides for greater participation of the members of the Section in committees, and is a step well worth while. With their research interests turning to other subjects, several members have dropped out, and four new men have been appointed. It may be well at this time to review briefly the field of study of the Committee on Dynamics of Streams. The Committee is concerned with the flow of water in rivers and smaller streams, the forces which the water exerts, the work which it does in erosion, transportation and deposition, and the relation between the streams and the channels they occupy. It is also concerned with the dynamics of rain‐ and surface‐waters in soil‐erosion.Research in the field, laboratory, and by means of analytical mechanics is being pursued and fostered by the Committee in order that the investigations might be as comprehensive as possible. The Committee is interested in the accumulation of scientific data as such, but also with a view to the utilization of these data in practical problems. Thus, an attempt to define the natural laws governing the transportation of sediment by streams is a specific aim, but the formulation of this new information so that it may be used in the design of river regulation‐works is likewise an important consid
