摘要:
Francis Birch has been a distinguished contributor to geophysical research for more than 30 years. He has treated many fundamental problems of the interior of the Earth in a rigorous and decisive manner.Birch has particular competence in engineering, in physical science, and in geology. He has brought the full power of these disciplines to boar in his studies of the properties of rocks under the extreme conditions which prevail within the mantle of the Earth.

摘要:
When we reflect on the origin and history of geophysics, it is thought‐provoking to single out three epochs of especial significance, separated from each other by about one millenium. The record shows that over two thousand years have passed since the beginning of serious geophysical thought. Indeed it was a few centuries before the start of the Christian era that Pythagoras came to the conclusion that the Earth has a spherical form; and about this time the early philosophers were able to make an estimate of the circumference of our globe, not merely to a crude approximation, but with truly remarkable accuracy in consideration of the state of science and the measuring tools available in those days. This was a noteworthy achievement in that it profoundly altered man's thinking in relation to the Earth and even the Universe. As we follow swiftly the development of science throughout the succeeding centuries, we may pause to note that something like ten centuries after our first epoch, a second notable advance in culture, in this instance within the Arabic countries, led to an extraordinary broadening of knowledge in many realms of science, including those bearing on an understanding of our Earth and its surroundings. This, strangely enough, happened during the very period in world history that over‐laps what for Europe has been called the Dark A

E. H. Vestine has called attention to three corrections in his paper,The Survey of the Geomagnetic Field in Space, in the March 1960 issue of theTransactions. On page 4, second column, twelfth line, the word should be ‘Measurements’ instead of ‘Measurement.’On page 17, in Table 1, column 5, line 6g, the entry should be ‘+3’ inste

摘要:
This symposium was part of the Annual Meetings of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Geophysical Union, sponsored by the U. S. National Committee for the IGY, the Planning Committee on Planetary Sciences of the AGU, and the U. S. National Committee for URSI. Support was provided by the National Science Foundation, and the symposium was arranged by Alan H. Shapley (Chairman), R. Grant Athay, Herbert Friedman, and Robert Jastrow. Two sessions were held in the Great Hall of the National Academy of Sciences on the afternoon of April 27 and the morning of April 28. About 300 persons attended each of the sessions.

摘要:
Because of the increasing pressure of other duties relating to earlier commitments, F. W. Reichelderfer found it necessary to resign as Vice President of the American Geophysical Union at the time of the Annual Meeting. In accordance with the Statutes, the Executive Committee has taken steps to designate Thomas F. Malone to complete Dr. Reichelderfer's unexpired term.

摘要:
The following report is based on material compiled by G. P. Woollard, of the Department of Geology, University of Wisconsin. Bulletin No. 33 outlined the organization of the IGY Seismology Program, reviewed the basic techniques used, and presented results of the marine program; the present report contains results of the continental program.
