摘要:
Geophysics is in process of improving its modes of communication internally and to the public and policy makers. In the coming years new or updated methods will be employed that could serve as a model for other disciplines. The pattern that is emerging results from discussions involving the Geophysics Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Committee for Geophysics, and the Council of the AGU.

摘要:
Fifty‐six scientists from the United States, Canada, and five European countries met at the University of Texas at Dallas, November 1–3, 1973, for a symposium on the magnetospheric cleft or cusp. A dozen different aspects of the cleft were each introduced by half‐hour invited talks; these were followed by contributed papers. Nearly half of the total time was unscheduled, permitting extensive and detailed discussions. This format was similar to the format of the substorm conference held last year (see the report by T.W. Hill, E&S, Dec 1972, p. 1148). Our experience again demonstrated the value of such a topical conference, the opportunity for extended discussion being highly valued b

摘要:
Kitt Peak National Observatory astronomers report the first evidence that a new 11‐year cycle of solar activity has begun. Observations with the McMath Solar Telescope late last August revealed an active region at high latitudes on the solar disk with magnetic polarity opposite to that of active regions during the present cycle. This and two other types of magnetic evidence of the onset of a new cycle were reported in the December 1, 1973, issue ofAstrophysical Journal Letter

摘要:
The Third Solar Wind Conference, cosponsored by the University of California and the University of Arizona will be held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, Calif., March 25–29, 1974. Topics selected for emphasis at the conference include solar abundances, history and evolution of the solar wind, structure and dynamics of the corona, macroscopic and microscopic properties, spatial gradients, cosmic rays as probes of the solar wind, stellar winds, and interactions with bodies in the solar win

摘要:
A conference covering all aspects of natural satellites of the solar system will be held June 18–21, 1974, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, under International Astronomical Union and COSPAR sponsorship.IAU Colloquium 28 will bring together specialists in the various fields of satellite astronomy: celestial mechanics, physical properties, origin, and evolution. Invited review papers will be given by leading authorities; these papers will compile, discuss, and interpret the masses of data that have been accumulated recently and will then attempt to develop a broad understanding of the origin and subsequent evolution of the natural satellite

摘要:
For years, Medvezhy (the Bear) glacier, one of the more than 4000 in the Pamirs of Soviet Central Asia, has been studied intensively by researchers of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In the summer of 1973 their efforts were rewarded. When Medvezhy once again began its sporadic and hitherto catastrophic slide toward the Vanch valley last May, it was fulfilling a prediction made by the scientists a year before. The government of Tajikistan had been warned, so that inhabitants of the danger zone, with their cattle and possessions, were relocated in ample time, and no deaths or injuries resulted. Steps were taken to avert or minimize the destruction attendant on similar slides in 1937, 1951, and 1963. But the mood of the Bear as he rose from hibernation in 1973 was no gentler than in those earlier years.
