摘要:
The problem of shoreline erosion has become a matter of much interest in the recent press. To some extent this interest has been driven by the slow rise in sea level that has lent an air of inevitabilty to matters. However, the discussions certainly become more focused by the approach of a major storm or hurricane: for instance, the 1985 scare associated with Hurricane Gloria. In fact, it is these major events that dominate the episodic erosion history of an area, and so it is on the basis of knowledge of these events that decisions are made on the development and management of our shorelines. Unfortunately, both our understanding of the fundamental processes and the extent to which our knowledge is transmitted to coastal planners is less than we might hope.

摘要:
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) polar‐orbiting environmental satellites routinely acquire imagery over the Soviet Arctic for ice analyses. In late 1984, during a routine search for satellite ice imagery of this area, Will Gould, chief archivist of the NOAA satellite imagery archive, discovered large cold plumes emanating from Novaya Zemlya Island, U.S.S.R. (74°N, 57°E). Subsequent random searches of the archive revealed other plume cases. To date, 11 cases have been documented between 1980 and 1986 (Table

摘要:
Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc. (JOI), in cooperation with the U.S. Science Advisory Committee (USSAC), is offering Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) graduate fellowships for students in residence at U.S. institutions to perform research on problems compatible with the interests of the ODP. Research proposals may involve participation in an upcoming leg on the drillship JOIDES Resolution andlor work on data that has been collected on prior ODP legs.

摘要:
Stephen P. Grand received the Best Student Paper Award from the Seismology Section for his paper entitled “A Tomographic Inversion for Shear Velocity Beneath the North American Plate,” which was presented at the 1986 AGU Spring Meeting. Grand graduated from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in 1978 and completed his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, this past spring, with Don Helmberger as his thesis advisor. He is continuing his work using tomographic techniques to investigate lateral variations in mantle velocity, and he is interested in relating these variations to physical processes such as subduction and convection. Grand recently joined the faculty of the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Cham
