摘要:
A shallow crustal earthquake of magnitude ML6.3 occurred on March 2, 1987, at 01:42:34 UT, close to the town of Edgecumbe, North Island, New Zealand. The focal depth was estimated to be 12±1 km. Surface deformation included multiple surface breaks. The main rupture was 7 km long and had a maximum of 2 m vertical displacement.Significant damage, estimated at over NZ$130 million (U.S$75 million), occurred to property in the surrounding region. Fortunately, few casualties and no deaths occurred as a direct result of the earthquake, partly because a magnitude ML) 5.2 foreshock occurred about 7 minutes before the main shock

摘要:
On October 15, 1987, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology voted favorably on H.R. 3228, a bill authorizing $1.079 billion over the next 3 fiscal years (FY) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) proposed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The bill authorizes $10 million to be spent in FY 1988 on siting and construction. Site proposals from 26 states are currently under review by DOE and the National Academy of Sciences. Before the committee approved the authorization, Don Ritter (R‐Pa.) introduced numerous amendments to the bill. The intent of the measures was to delay complete funding for the project until careful and objective site selection and partial funding of the SSC from other countries could be assured. All of the amendments were voted dow

摘要:
Better understanding of the structure and function of natural ecosystems is now widely regarded as essential to protecting the habitability of our planet. Fortunately, the oceans are not yet at the stage of exploitation and rapid alteration that terrestrial environments, especially the tropical rain forests, are now experiencing. Our wise use of the oceans in the future, however, will depend upon having a firm and fundamental understanding of why marine ecosystems are structured the way they are, how they function, and what are the forces that hold them together or make them change. There is still time to acquire the requisite knowledge, and we believe that prolonged direct observation at open ocean sites can contribute greatly. The logistics for this are of a reasonable scale. New (but tested) measurement and data processing techniques can produce a very extensive yet manageable data set. Therefore, to enhance our basic scientific understanding and to provide information for future management decisions, we propose that a program for multiyear occupation of midocean stations should be designed and fielded by the international oceanographic community.
