摘要:
Paleotidal cycles ranging from semidiurnal to the lunar nodal cycle apparently are recorded by late Precambrian (∼650 Ma) rhythmically laminated sedimentary rocks (rhythmites) of postulated ebb‐tidal origin in South Australia. The rhythmites may provide unique information on paleotidal periods and Earth's paleorotation: the late Precambrian year contained in ∼13.1 (±0.5) lunar months and ∼400 (±20) days, and the late Precambrian lunar month ∼30.5 (±1.5) days; the periods of the lunar apsides and lunar nodal cycles were then 9.7 (±0.3) and 19.5 (±0.5) years respectively. These values suggest that since late Precambrian time the average equivalent phase lag [the angle between the Earth‐Moon axis and Earth's tidal bulge, derived from the response of the solid and ocean tides; Lambeck, 1980] was near 3° rather than the present value of 6°. Precambrian sedimentary rhythmites may record much valuable information on the early history of Earth's rotation a

摘要:
During the 8th Session of the World Meteorological Organization Commission for Hydrology in Geneva, I had the honor and pleasure to present the International Association of Hydrological Sciences Hydrology Prize jointly to Sorin Dumitrescu of Paris and Jaromir Němec of Geneva, who distinguished themselves by their contributions to hydrology on the international scene during the past two decades.Dumitrescu, a native of Rumania, who presently is the Acting Assistant Director General of the Natural Science Sector of Unesco, was cited for his multifaceted initiatives in his tenure as Director of the Unesco Division of Water Sciences during which he provided strong leadership for the International Hydrological Decade and later for the International Hydrology Program, which have become the mainstream of international scientific hydrological activities

摘要:
The Task Committee on Guidelines for Artificial Recharge of Groundwater, of the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Irrigation and Drainage Division, sponsored an International Symposium on Artificial Recharge of Groundwater at the Inn‐at‐the‐Park Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., August 23–27, 1988. Cosponsors were the U.S. Geological Survey, California Department of Water Resources, University of California Water Resources Center, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, with cooperation from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, International Association of Hydrological Sciences, American Water Resources Association, U.S. Agency for International Development, World Bank, United Nations Department of Technical Cooperation for Development, and a number of local and state organizations.Because of the worldwide interest in artificial recharge and the need to develop efficient recharge facilities, the Anaheim symposium brought together an interdisciplinary group of engineers and scientists to provide a forum for many professional disciplines to exchange experiences and findings related to various types of artificial recharge; learn from both successful and unsuccessful case histories; promote technology transfer between the various disciplines; provide an education resource for communication with those who are not water scientists, such as planners, lawyers, regulators, and the public in general; and indicate directions by which cities or other entities can save funds by having reasonable technical guidelines for implementation of a recharge

摘要:
For the first time, the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering and the Institute of Medicine have released reports providing a president‐elect with specific advice on science and technology issues.Released only days before President Reagan's final budget was sent to Congress, the “white papers” recommend that NASA's space station be developed only if consistent with clearly stated long term space goals, that natural gas be promoted as an alternative to fossil fuels that release more CO2, and that Bush's science advisor should occupy a senior White House position such as assistant to the Pres

摘要:
From simple suggestions sometimes spring great accomplishments. For Wolfgang Berger the beginning was a suggestion from his doctoral advisor, Fred Phleger, who said, in response to a question about what Wolf might pursue for a dissertation, “study planktonic foraminifera.”At the time the suggestion probably would not have been of interest to a geophysics or geochemistry student, but luckily for all of us, Wolfs early training was in paleontology and stratigraphy, and he took Fred's suggestion. The result has been a rich flow of ideas about the formation and preservation of biogenic sediments in the deep‐sea carbonate dissolution, climatic change, global ocean productivity, and the Cenozoic

摘要:
The new Suncoast Chapter of AGU, in St. Petersburg, Fla., has elected William M. Sackett of the University of South Florida president for 1989, William O. Sayre of Eckerd College president‐elect, and Jabe A. Breland of the university secretary‐treasurer. The group organized in September 1988 and held elections November 21 at their second meeting, which was attended by AGU executive director Fred Spilhaus. The chapter has 24 memb
