摘要:
The velocity of light and the velocity of propagation of radio waves are theoretically identical in vacuo. With refined methods of utilizing radar, long distances can be measured with considerable accuracy. This paper describes the methods used to measure 47 lines varying in length from 67 mi to 367 mi. Six of the lines measured could be compared with geodetic distances obtained from first‐order triangulation. The entire network of lines was so designed that a rigid adjustment could be made. From tie comparison with the six geodetic lengths and from an adjustment of the 41 other lines, a value of the velocity of propagation of radio waves in vacuo is deduced which exceeds lay 16 km/sec the Anderson value of velocity of light in vacuo of 299,776 km/sec. All sources of error are discusse

摘要:
Extensive microclimatological investigations, currently under way in the United States, are primarily concerned with the vertical structure of the layer of air near the ground. Optimum progress in microclimatology is contingent upon improvement of measurements, articles and monographs synthesizing present knowledge, and standardization of terminology, techniques, and analyses.

摘要:
A continuous record of variations of the total magnetic field intensity was taken along a single flight line from Adak, Alaska to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, on Project Volcano during the summer of 1947. Anomalies as large as 750 gamma extending over distances of 20 to 30 mi were found over open ocean areas between Adak and Midway, where ocean depths range from 2000 to 3000 fathoms. A rather complete survey, at an altitude of 1500 ft above sea level, was made over Bikini Atoll and the adjacent seamount. A broad negative anomaly of 750 gammas was recorded over Bikini, with several superimposed more localized anomalies; those associated with the adjacent seamount were larger than those associated with Bikini.

摘要:
A series of experiments was performed to test the possibility of using OPEN‐end pipes with float‐type recorders for measuring wave heights, for the purpose of applying these data to the planning of coastal engineering structures. The main problem was one of resonance in the tubes. This was particularly pronounced in actual installation for wave periods of from one to six seconds. A mathematical analysis has been made for the case of a train of waves of constant period. It was shown that the hand of frequencies encountered in the ocean would make it quite difficult if not a practical impossibility to analyze data obtained by this met

摘要:
Waves and swell have been recorded off western Cape Cod and eastern Bermuda by means of underwater wave meters. The waves and swell recorded off Cape Cod appear to fall into two groups having relatively short and long periods, respectively. The former group (5.5 to 11 sec) is correlated with prevailing southerly winds over east coastal waters. Study of the long‐period swell suggests a more distant origin, with indications that ocean swell travels with constant period and group velocity. Some general rules relating to storm positions and observed swell are derived from the wave and weather data associated with two Atlantic storm

摘要:
A summary of the various instances where wave theories have been verified experimentally is presented briefly. A more detailed discussion is given for those problems where models built to several scales have permitted an evaluation of the effect of scale in the application of data from hydraulic models.

摘要:
Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is characterized by great variations in location and activity of thermal features. A new and popular “geyser” developed in the center of a paved parking area, in the spring of 1946. Observations on the types and changes of activity of this feature are recorded for a three month period. Late phases of activity appear to be directly related to the frequency of local rainfall and the resultant effect upon ground water circulat

摘要:
This paper discusses day‐to‐day application of the author's method of flood‐storage accounting as used in flood‐forecasting studies on the Roanoke River above Buggs Island Dam Site in Virginia. Use is made of data from six telemark installations at river gages above the Dam Site. This method has been used to predict successfully the flood rises on the Roanok

摘要:
The City of Bountiful, Utah, is situated just beyond the eastern edge of an area where alluvial gravel and sand of Pleistocene and probably Tertiary age yield water by artesian flow. Attempts to recharge these aquifers by diversion of surplus stream water into a spreading canal east of the city have been unsuccessful, because of the relative impermeability of the torrential debris which has accumulated along the western base of the Wasatch Range. Instead, the water spread from the canal has increased the yield of permeable shore deposits of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville which crop out east of the city.
