On April 30, 1984, Professor Doctor Engineer J.T. Thijsse, professor emeritus of the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, passed away at the age of 91.Johannes T. Thijsse was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1893, the son of a well‐known Dutch biologist. He graduated from the Delft University of Technology in 1917 with a degree in civil engineering. In 1927, he became the first director of the newly formed Delft Hydraulics Laboratory, a function he continued until 1960. In 1936, Thijsse received a lectureship in hydraulics at the Delft University, to be followed in 1938 by his appointment as Professor Extraordinary and in 1946 as ordinary professo

This book is a blend of papers from two separate symposia, one held at Woods Hole, Mass., in June 1977 and the other at the North American Paleontological Convention in Lawrence, Kan., in August of the same year. The latter concerned problems of the Cretaceous‐Tertiary boundary event, whereas the theme of the Woods Hole symposium was the current state of uniformitarianism. The combining of papers from the two symposia makes for a curious mixture that does not always address the subject of catastrophe

The number of papers presented at the 1985 Spring Meeting was the second largest in AGU's Spring Meeting history: 1539 papers were presented, only 10 less than the record number in 1980. Paid attendance was 2339, which was just under the highest ever attendance in 1979.
