TheRig Seismic, a new vessel belonging to the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources, recently completed its first major marine geophysical expedition in the southern Indian Ocean over the Kerguelen Plateau. The scientific objectives of the program were to clarify the plateau's origin, evolution, structure, stratigraphy, and tectonic framework.

In an earlier article inEos(December 21, 1982, p. 1219), I suggested that members of AGU had been seriously remiss in not forming proper author teams in order to write “memorable” geophysical research papers. A number of the original suggestions were rejected either on the grounds of good taste (see the “unabridged” preprint version of the paper, available from the author) or else because of political sensitivity (e.g., “Crooked magnetic field lines” by AGU members Agnew and Nixon). Organic geochemistry, or to be more specific for the purposes of this review, petroleum geochemistry, is an area of research that has been developing extremely rapidly in the last few years. Many of the concepts developed in research laboratories in the late 1970s are now routinely used by petroleum companies in investigating exploration problems. The second edition ofPetroleum Formation and Occurrencereflects many of the changes that have occurred in the field since the first edition of this book was published in 1978. The new chapters that have been added and the parts of the text that have been updated are a clear indication of the areas in which most work has been done in the past 6 years.

摘要:
Lind S. Gee, a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, is the first recipient of the AGU Seismology Section's newly established Best Student Paper Award. The award was for her paper on the recovery of upper mantle structure by higher‐mode waveform analysis, which was coauthored with A.L. Lerner‐Lamand and T.H. Jordan. The calculations that she presented demonstrated that there is a rich potential for earth structure experiments utilizing these techniques. The award is given on the basis of paper content and presentation, and it was clear that her contribution was outstanding on both counts. Lind received her B.A. in Geology from Harvard in 1982 and expects to complete her Ph.D. work at MIT by 1
