Over the last 2 decades the size and complexity of experiments have grown enormously in the area of space science, with the result that large teams of scientists are often formed to help design and build a given instrument. Simultaneously, a large number of research studies have evolved from the simple examination of one's own data to detailed studies involving multidisciplinary data sets. The end result is the publication of an incredible number of papers with a large number of coauthors.The central idea behind a given research topic usually orginates from one, two, or sometimes three people. Yet data from several different experiments are often required to bring the idea to fruition. This necessitates interaction with other scientists, whose contributions are often useful in strengthening and clarifying the theme of the paper. Thus the originators and the contributors have both played a part in the saga. Yet do both groups deserve equal billing? In the case of the cooriginators, they are often cast adrift among the sea of coauthors, where little credit is usually given. Is this a fair policy?

A simple, easily used data management system for digital scientific data has been developed for scientists whose primary interest is data analysis rather than data management. This file system, herein called FLATDBMS, features standardized input/output (I/O) operations and nonhierarchical direct access self‐documenting data files. The system is designed for scientists who interact with a variety of data sets when using FORTRAN programs. The design is particularly suited to searching for and selecting particular intervals of data, documenting data manipulations, and operating interactively with data. The cornerstone of the system is seven basic subroutines that perform the I/O operations in all applications programs. Recent measurements made with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) have revealed a compression of the eastern part of the United States that could provide more than a sufficient amount of strain energy to account for all of the earthquakes that occur there. Steven A. Readers of this book will generally fit into two groups. One group consists of geologists and geochemists, who have studied the global carbon cycle for many decades. These readers will find that the papers in this book present a new view of familiar themes. Whereas much previous work on the carbon cycle and other geochemical cycles has emphasized the nature of the steady state maintained by complex networks of feedbacks, recent attention has shifted to the changes implied by the way these feedbacks respond to perturbations.

The Education and Human Resources Committee sponsored a panel session on “The Two‐Career Couple” during the 1985 AGU Fall Meeting. Panelists were Gerard and Patricia Fryer (Hawaii Institute of Geophysics (HIG), Honolulu), Richard and Christina Scott (Acurex, Inc. and Earth Sciences Associates, Palo Alto), and Catherine Nigrini (private consultant, La Habra, Calif.). The panelists were asked to outline the stages in their personal and professional lives and to discuss the lessons they felt that they had learned and the advice that they wish others had given them.
