摘要:
Magnetic field reconnection plays a crucial role in determining the topology of magnetic fields in cosmic plasmas and also provides an efficient way for the conversion of magnetic energy into kinetic energy. Much work has been done on this topic in many interrelated fields of interest by many researchers. The author's primary field of interest is magnetospheric physics, in particular, magnetic reconnection processes in the dayside magnetopause and the magnetotail. Understanding of these processes has improved greatly over the past 3 decades, but there is still much work to be done.

摘要:
The need for large‐volume storage for oceanographic and environmental measurement applications is critical to the success of modern instrument systems. The use of similar media in differing recording applications (ships, buoys, or land stations) strongly enhances ease of analysis. Magnetic media have been used in many forms for years, accompanied by the inherent problems this mediapresents. Recent magnetic disk technology presents unique potential but, for many reasons, is not suitable for field use in applications where extremes of temperature and motion prevai

摘要:
The cover of the March 1 issue ofEosshowed a time series of acoustic scattering above Southeast Hancock Seamount (29°48′N, 178°05′E) on July 17–18, 1984. In a comment on that cover Martin Hovland (Eos, August 2, p. 760) argued that gas or “other far reaching causes” may be involved in the observed acoustic signals. He favors a hypothesis that acoustic scattering observed above a seeping pockmark in the North Sea is a combination of bubbles, stable microbubbles, and pelagic organisms and infers that this may be a more general phenomenon and indeed plays a role in the attraction of organisms

摘要:
There is a worldwide effort to study and identify spatial and temporal variation of seismicity and recognize patterns that precede earthquakes “Mogi, 1969, 1984; Ohtake et al, 1977a, b; Habermann, 1981; Wyss et al, 1983; Liu Puxiong et al, 1984; Ohnaka, 1984–1985; and many others”.Gupta and Singh “1986” carried out a detailed study of earthquake swarms and quiescence which precede major earthquakes in the northeast India region and concluded: 1. Moderate magnitude to great earthquakes in the northeast India region are found to be preceded, generally, by well‐defined earthquake swarms and quiesce

摘要:
This book is an outgrowth of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Chemical Transport in Metasomatic Processes which was held in Greece, June 3–16, 1985. Seventeen invited lectures (papers), a field excursion guide, and poster session papers (10) and abstracts (6) are included in the volume. The lecture papers, field guide, and poster session papers/abstracts constitute approximately 60, 6, and 34% of the volume, respectivel

摘要:
John Sclater of the University of Texas at Austin has succeeded Walter Munk as chairman of the National Research Council's Ocean Studies Board. His term runs to June 30, 1991. The 17 members of OSB represent major disciplines in oceanography. The board advises the academic community and agencies of the federal government responsible for funding basic and applied research in oceanography and for maintaining the wellbeing of the oceans.

摘要:
The SURTROPAC group of the Centre ORSTOM de Noumea, New Caledonia, South Pacific, will host an international meeting on TOGA (Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere Program) followed by a workshop for planning the TOGA‐COARE work (Coupled Ocean‐Atmosphere Response Experiment) in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean. Joel Picaut of ORSTOM‐Noumea and Roger Lukas of the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) of the University of Hawaii are joint convenors. The conference will be sponsored by France, the United States, and the International TOGA Project Office. Tentative dates for the meetingand workshop are May 24–3

摘要:
The National Space Club has established a new award in recognition of the role that scientists and scientific investigations in space have played in advancing the goals of the United States Space Program. The award will be presented annually to the individual or group of specifically named individuals whose efforts have resulted in a significant contribution to the U.S. Space Science Program. The first Science Award will be presented at the Goddard Memorial Dinner in Washington, D.C., during March of 1989. The award recipient(s) will be selected by an awards committee appointed by the president of the National Space Club. The committee is chaired by Noel Hinners, Associate Deputy Administrator and Chief Scientist for NASA. Final selection will be completed by the first week in February.
