摘要:
The concept of magnetic reconnection originated with the suggestion byGiovanelli[1946] that particles could be energized during solar flares near nulls in the magnetic field.Hoyle[1949] subsequently proposed that such a process could also act at nulls between the geomagnetic field and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) to generate the energized particles responsible for auroral displays. However, the idea of the interconnection of the two magnetic fields, as we know it today, was first presented by Hoyle's student,Dungey[1953, 1961].

摘要:
Realization of the vital importance of water led to development of the International Hydrological Decade (IHD) and the subsequent International Hydrological Program (IHP). The increasing importance of water, vital to all life on this planet, can be visualized easily from the estimation that the total world population will increase to 6.5 billion by 2000, with 50% residing in the humid tropics or other warm regions. The largest increases are predicted in developing countries. In 1963R. L. NaceandL. J. Tisonpointed out that these developing countries would not only need to receive hydrology technology, but also need the education and training to develop the hydrologic specialists to put that technology into practice and thus solve their present and future water problems.

摘要:
The purpose of this session, held at the 1989 Fall AGU meeting in San Francisco, was to discuss recent advances in methods for estimating the loads of dissolved and sediment‐bound constituents transported by streams and rivers. The issue is important because many local, state and regional water authorities require accurate estimates to guide their water‐quality management practices. The session dealt with two major topics: analysis of existing data sets, and design of efficient sampling procedures for future data collection. The papers were about techniques for small streams as well as large rivers, employing both high and low frequency sampling. Several presentations dealt with case studies and problems that have been encountered in practice. Abstracts of the eleven contributed and invited papers were published inEos(70, 1105–1106, 1989). About 60 people attended the session, chaired by Timothy A. Cohn of the U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Va. The session was sponsored by the AGU Hydrology Se

摘要:
The theme of the 1990 Front Range Branch meeting was Our Changing Environment. This broad topic was intended to encompass a variety of geophysical disciplines over geologic time, but special emphasis was placed on research relating to the Rocky Mountains, the Front Range, and High Plains. In a departure from earlier years, the meeting was held in Boulder, Colo., at a new conference center addition to the historic Hotel Boulderado. Meeting dates were February 5–
