摘要:
Fram 2 was a research program conducted from ice stations on drifting pack ice from March 19, 1980 to May 5, 1980. The research concentrated on underwater acoustics, marine geophysics, and physical oceanography in the eastern Arctic Ocean and had the financial support of the Office of Naval Research.Personnel from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Lamont‐Doherty Geological Observatory (LDGO), Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), University of Washington (UW), Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and Polar Research Laboratory, Inc. (PRL), participated in the program. The Fram 2 program had logistic air support by the 317th Tactical Air Wing of the U.S. Air Force, by the Danish Air Force, Greenland Air Charter, Bradley Air, and PolAir. The Polar Science Center of the University of Washington (PSCUW) was responsible for the overall planning and management of the logistics suppor

摘要:
SEQUAL (Seasonal Response of the Equatorial Atlantic) is a program to study the dynamical response of the upper equatorial Atlantic Ocean to the seasonally varying surface winds. This response affects the climate of the earth because, in low latitudes, seasonal and interannual changes in the heat content of the upper ocean a redetermined not only by the local fluxes of heat from the atmosphere to the ocean but also by the large‐scale dynamical response of the ocean to variable winds. In the tropical Atlantic, for example, seasonal changes in the heat storage are caused primarily by the horizontal redistribution of heat associated with wind‐induced changes in the topography of the thermocline (Figure 1). The object of SEQUAL is to describe accurately, and to model correctly, the changes in the upper ocean currents, density field, and surface winds during one season throughout the equatorial Atlantic Oc

摘要:
The National Science Board (NSB) recently voted to endorse a program of scientific ocean drilling that would replace the 14‐yearoldGlomar Challengerwith theGlomar Exploreras the pillar of scientific drilling. This vote by the policymaking arm of the National Science Foundation (NSF) gives another boost to the proposed drilling plan. The plan also has the blessings of the Conference on Scientific Ocean Drilling (COSOD) and of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Ocean Drilling.NSF now will approach the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to request that $9 million of NSF funds be transferred to the Advanced Ocean Drilling (AOD) program in fiscal 1983 for the next design stages for the Explorer (Eos, March 2, 1982, p. 179). With the support of NSB, COSOD, and the NAS committee, the request goes to OSTP and OMB with strong backing. If OSTP and OMB give the transfer the green light, Congress will review the reques

摘要:
Mt. St. Helens Volcano, Cascade Range, southern Washington (46.20°N, 122.18°W). All times are local (GMT−8h). The first explosive eruption from Mt. St. Helens in 17 months ejected a tephra cloud that briefly rose to more than 13.5‐km altitude on March 19. A directed blast from near the base of the lava dome spawned a multilobate avalanche that flowed several kilometers down the volcano's north flank. A mudflow moved down the north fork of the Toutle River but caused only minor damage. Clouds produced by explosions March 20–21 were much smaller and contained only a little tephra. Lava extrusion began March 21, adding a new lobe to the southeast side of the crater's composite dome. The eruption had been predicted by the USGS (see our report in last week'sEos) and no injuries resulted

摘要:
General Climatology 3is volume 3 of the seriesWorld Survey of Climatology, which consists of 15 volumes containing review articles on a broad range of topics.General Climatology 3contains four chapters: ‘Human Bioclimatology,’ ‘Agricultural Climatology,’ ‘City Climate,’ and ‘Technical Climatology.’ Each of these chapters will be briefly described here.‘Human Bioclimatology,’ the first chapter, was authored by E. Flach and provides a survey of the effects on the human organism of the physical conditions at the earth's surface. It contains four main sections. A section entitled ‘Light and Life’ deals with the effects of solar radiation on man and contains much interesting information on the response of the human eye and human skin to radiation at various frequencies. ‘Air and Life’ discusses the composition of air and its effect on human health and performance, including discussions of the effects of altitude, aerosols, and noxious trace gases. ‘Temperature and Life’ discusses how the body responds to temperature and how it maintains its heat budget under the variety of conditions to which it falls subject and considerable discussion is given to objective ways to characterize air conditions that give an accurate measure of their impact on the body. This discussion leads naturally into the final section, ‘Bioclimatological Evaluation Systems,’ which addresses the problem of how to classify a particular site according to its over
