摘要:
C‐SALT (Caribbean Sheets and Layers Transects) was a combined mesoscale, fine structure, and microstructure survey of the strong thermohaline staircase found in the tropical North Atlantic east of Barbados. This area lies at the confluence of the high‐salinity subtropical underwater at 150 m depth and the fresh Antarctic intermediate water at 750 m depth. The superposition of these two extrema gives rise to a very strong destabilizing vertical salinity gradient that can drive salt finger convection. During spring and fall 1985 the C‐SALT field program found an area of over 1 million km2, with staircase layering. The 5–30‐m‐thick layers were found to have horizontal coherence scales of hundreds of kilometers and revealed consistent temperature and salinity changes within layers. Tracer data imply enhanced vertical fluxes in the staircase relative to nearby regions; however, microstructure measurements indicate that the salt fingers were rather weak, at least in the fall. Direct shadowgraph observations suggest that the fingers were strongly tilted by the modest shears between layers. These results will require revisions in current models of salt fingering, but should contribute substantially to the goal of parameterizing the double‐diffusive mix

摘要:
The National Science Foundation, with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is planning U.S. participation in the Global Ocean Flux Study (GOFS). GOFS is scheduled to take place during the 1990s. The goal of GOFS is to identify and quantify the physical, chemical, and biological processes that control biogeochemical cycling in the ocean, as well as their interaction with the global atmosphere, so that we can understand the processes governing the production and fate of biogenic materials in the sea well enough to predict their influences on and responses to global‐scale perturbations. GOFS is a key element of the International Geosphere‐Biosphere Program (IG

摘要:
El Niño, a climatic disturbance that shifts much of the world's weather pattern every 2–7 years, has returned and is probably near the midpoint of its expected 18‐month life cycle, according to an announcement by the National Weather Service (NWS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This El Niño appears to be much milder than its predecessor 4 years ago, from April 1982 to July 1983. That event, the worst in more than 100 years, caused floods and droughts that led to more than 1000 deaths and $2 billion to $8 billion in economic losses. The phenomenon comes about when equatorial winds that normally blow the Pacific Ocean's surface waters from east to west weaken or reverse themselves. The warm surface waters then flow from west to east. Results include a decrease in rainfall in the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, New Guinea, and Southern Africa; increased rainfall in the South American coast, the southeastern United States, and eastern Africa; and milder than normal weather in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, western Canada, and Alaska. The current El Niño was successfully predicted by at least three different scientific models, according to The New York Times, although the event began somewhat later than ex
