A 26‐km‐long fault in southwest Oklahoma that has long been thought to be in active may instead turn out to be a relatively young fault. Primarily because of the lack of evidence indicating recent or historical earthquake activity, the Meers Fault, located near the Witchita Mountains and first mapped in the 1960s, was thought to have been inactive for as long as 300 million years. New data, however, suggests that the fault may have slipped within at least the last 10,000 years and possibly more recently (see Figure

American high‐pressure research with large sample volumes developed rapidly in the 1950s during the race to produce synthetic diamonds. At that time the piston cylinder, girdle (or belt), and tetrahedral anvil devices were invented. However, this development essentially stopped in the late 1950s, and while the diamond anvil cell has been used extensively in the United States with spectacular success for high‐pressure experiments in small sample volumes, most of the significant technological advances in large‐volume devices have taken place in Japan. Over the past 25 years, these technical advances have enabled a fourfold increase in pressure, with many important investigations of the chemical and physical properties of materials synthesized at high temperatures and pressures that cannot be duplicated with any apparatus currently available in the United S

The Congressional Science Fellowship that I enjoyed in 1982–1983 has served my career in the environmental field in three ways so far. First, it gave me an excellent introduction to the federal government and to environmental laws and programs in particular. The time spent in Congress is highly valuable for learning how Washington operates and how various constituent groups, both inside and outside of government, affect public policy.
