摘要:
I have just returned from another meeting where a bewildering series of ten‐minute papers was presented and audience attendance decayed with a one‐day half life. Many of these papers were very worthwhile, but complicated material on too many slides made most of them incomprehensible. Anyone who wanted to understand a presentation sought out the author for private conversation. At large national meetings there are so many contributed papers that several sessions must run concurrently with frequently overlapping interest. Then it becomes physically impossible to cover some papers of interest. Furthermore most contributed papers are not ready for publication or in preprint form so it is impossible to obtain the results of these papers for several mon

摘要:
Members of learned societies are markedly passive when it comes to the business affairs and even policies of their associations. They leave these matters to a group of elected few. As long as the member receives his publications and has the opportunity to present papers and exchange views with his fellows at meetings, he feels that all his further obligations to the Union are covered by a bit of mild grumbling about the dues and the officers. Some may scan the minutes of the Council and wonder how people can spend a whole day transacting so little business. Many never even go that far.

摘要:
A publication on water management of theNational Academy of Sciences[1966, 38] contains the following statement: In the public allocation process it is unlikely that society will welcome widepread and strict allocation of water. Water is regarded as a birthright of Americans—a common holding in which there are common stakes. Other commodities are not so regarded; water is singled out for special consideration. This statement is an expression of human rights without qualification as to property or economic status. It also implies that people have rights to water suitable and adequate to their needs wherever they may b

摘要:
A globe‐circling balloon, launched September 29, 1967, at Christchurch, New Zealand, by researchers from NCAR, Boulder, Colorado, has broken all previous balloon flight‐duration records by remaining aloft for one year. The Global Horizontal Sounding Technique balloon circumnavigated the Southern Hemisphere more than 25 times, floating at a constant pressure‐level of 100 mbs, or about 52,000 feet. Made of mylar plastic and inflated with helium, the light and fragile balloon carried a five‐ounce electronics package which transmitted a radio signal for tracking purposes. The flight's duration helps demonstrate the feasibility of an operational GHOST system of 5,000 to 10,000 balloons circling the earth at predetermined atmospheric levels to collect weather data from most of the earth's atmosphere. Currently, adequate observations are available from only about 15% of th

摘要:
The meeting was held in San Francisco at the San Francisco Hilton, December 2–5, 1968. AGU's first western exhibition was held December 2–4. Just under 1000 registrants participated in what was felt to have been a successful meeting. The complete program with abstracts was published in the December 1968 issue of Transactions on pages 629

摘要:
The Council met in San Francisco in early December. Its principal actions, important to all members, are given below:1. Noting the considerable nonmember presentation of papers at AGU meetings, the Council voted that at future meetings the senior author of a paper must be a member or be ‘introduced’ by a member: that is, the abstract or other listing shall indicate the name of a sponsoring mem

摘要:
The Fifth Award of the Vetlesen Prize was made to Francis Birch and Sir Edward C. Bullard on the evening of November 25, 1968, at Columbia University in New York City. Distinguished scientists from the entire nation attended this brilliant occasion, which climaxed an all‐day symposium on drilling and coring the deep sea. AGU was represented by Executive Director Waldo E. Smith. Birch, of Harvard University, and Bullard, of Cambridge University, were jointly honored for their outstanding work in solid‐state physics and fundamental geophysics, which has contributed to our understanding of major tectonic proces
