摘要:
A scientific core hole has been drilled into the western ring fracture zone of the Valles Caldera, N.Mex. Hole VC‐2A, the second scientific core hole in the caldera, was cored through a faulted and brecciated sequence of intracaldera tuffs and volcaniclastic rocks to a depth of 528 m at Sulphur Springs. As of November 1, 1986, the unequilibrated bottom hole temperature was 212°C. The rocks that have been penetrated are intensely altered and contain molybdenite mineralization (MnC>2) that is less than or equal to 1.1 m.y. in age. The active hydrothermal system at Sulphur Springs consists of a thin (5‐m) acid condensation zone overlying vapor‐ and water‐dominated zones. The latter two zones are apparently separated by a region of tightly sea

摘要:
The use of portable drilling equipment in field sampling for paleomagnetic research has been commonplace for well over 2 decades. Advances in field drilling “technology” in the past 10 years or so have afforded paleomagnetists a quite straightforward, reasonably painless, and very portable means of obtaining independently, accurately oriented samples for their research. Perhaps the last major breakthrough, in particular, with all due respect for the back of the unsuspecting graduate student/field assistant, would be the availability of dehydrated wa

摘要:
The mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of deformable substrates at the base of glaciers have in the past several years been recognized as principal unknowns in considerations of glacier dynamics. This session, held during the 1986 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., was organized to assemble information and to promote discussion of deformable glacier beds.

摘要:
David Bates' research career extends over half a century, covers almost half a dozen fields, and continues to the present with undiminished vigor. An interest in the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere has been a persistent theme.David made trailblazing contributions to our understanding of atomic and molecular processes in the ionosphere. He pioneered early theoretical studies of the aurora and airglow. He pondered, before it was fashionbirefringence able, factors influencing the composition of the atmosphere, not just short‐lived photochemical products such as ozone but also longer‐lived gases such as carbon monoxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. He recognized the importance and subtlety of the ties that link the atmosphere to life and to the world of soil and ocean and foresaw the emerging importance of industrial man as an influence on the global environm

摘要:
On August 3, 1987, Leslie H. Meredith will join the AGU staff in the newly created position of Director of Research Programs. He will also have the title of Group Director, and in that capacity, the Meetings and Member Programs Division will report to him. The establishment of the Research Programs Division will put power behind a very important thrust for the Union. Since the Second World War, AGU has been known for its outstanding publications and meetings. In the 1920s and 1930s, AGU, as a National Academy of Sciences committee, played a strong role in determining scientific directions for geophysics. Now, with the strong support of Past President Charles Drake and President‐Elect Don Anderson, and under the leadership of President Peter Eagleson, the Union is preparing to resume a more active role in this area and in advocating polic

摘要:
The business meeting of the Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism Section was held on Thursday, May 21, during the 1987 AGU Spring Meeting. Over 50 people attended the luncheon and concurrent meeting, which was presided over by section president Subhir Banerjee (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis). The following are highlights of the meeting. For additional information on any of these topics, please contact the designated individual. Secretary Laurie Brown (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) announced the winners of the Best Student Paper award for the 1986 Fall Meeting. Recipients were Pordur Arason (Oregon State University, Corvallis) and Franz Heider (University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada), as reported in the previous issue of The GP Compass (seeEos, March 24, 1987, p. 162). Volunteers are requested to serve on the Student Award Committee for either the 1987 Fall or 1988 Spring meetings.
