摘要:
The purpose of this article is to correct the generally held impression that the metaphor ‘aurora borealis’ (northern dawn) originated with Gassendi in 1621. The first published use of it by Gassendi actually apeared in 1649 in a passage describing an auroral display that he observed in 1621. The metaphor appeared 30 years earlier, in 1619, in a work at least partially and probably completely authored by Galileo. We argue here that its appearance in this work, ‘Discourse on the Comets,’ is the origin of the m

摘要:
The first visiting astronomer to use the 4‐meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter‐American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile has reported finding that one of our nearest neighbor galaxies may be very much younger than the universe itself. Harvey Butcher of Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona explained that this discovery may cause difficulty for the generally held belief that all galaxies were formed at approximately the same period early in the history of the universe, that is, 10–15 billion years ago.Astronomers using the CTIO telescopes in the southern hemisphere can study many celestial objects, including the central region of our Milky Way galaxy, that cannot be observed from northern sites. Among the celestial objects visible from CTIO are the Magellanic Clouds, our closest galactic neighbors, which lie some 200,000 light years from the Milky Way. The Large Magellanic Cloud and its companion the Small Magellanic Cloud are two hazy areas in the sky discovered by Magellan's crew when they sailed far south on the historic voyage around the world between 1520 and 1522. The hazy areas subsequently were found to be gal

摘要:
A new kind of electron microscope system was demonstrated at the 9th International Congress on Electron Microscopy. The new system adds a patented ‘twin lens’ objective and a scanning transmission control unit (STEM) to the Philips EM‐400 electron microscope. This makes imaging at atomic resolution possible with the capability of analyzing materials as tiny as a billionth of a meter with the STEM's ‘Nano Probe,’ which fires a finely focused beam of electrons at t

摘要:
A new prize for astrophysics will be awarded for the first time next year. The prize, endowed by the Heineman Foundation for Research, Educational, Charitable and Scientific Purposes, will be administered by the American Institute of Physics (AIP), and the American Astronomical Society (AAS) will select the recipient. The winner will be picked on an international basis and cited for outstanding achievement in the field of astrophysics.

摘要:
The first annual June Bacon‐Bercey Scholarship in Atmospheric Sciences for Women has been awarded to Anthea J . Coster, a second‐year student in the Rice University graduate program in space physics and astronomy. Ms. Coster, the daughter of a geophysicist and granddaughter of a professor of physics, received her B.A. degree, with honors, in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin. She followed this with courses in physics and mathematics at the University of Houston, where she worked with the space physics group, which was involved in auroral studies. She is currently affiliated with a research group engaged in ionospheric research, and this past summer Ms. Coster spent 8 weeks at the Arecibo Observatory working on an experiment in heating of the ionosphere related to the space solar power satellite prob

摘要:
The fifth annual meeting of the Canadian Geophysical Union was held at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, on May 15–17, 1978. The four previous meetings of the Union were held in conjunction with either the Geological Association of Canada or the Canadian Association of Physicists, since the CGU is a division of both of these parent organizations. At the previous meetings the CGU typically sponsored two or three sessions on geophysics as part of a program with either a dominant geology or physics flavor. With a membership of less than 300 and many specialized conferences competing for geophysicists' time and conference money it was with some trepidation that the CGU decided to try a meeting on its own. Ten technical sessions were proposed and 133 abstracts of papers were received, which necessitated the creation of an additional half‐day session in paleomagnetism and rock magnetism; 224 registered participants attended one or more days of the meeti
