摘要:
I agree wholeheartedly with P. H. McTaggart‐Cowan's suggestion in the February ‘Forum’.The log jam produced by the present referee‐publishing system must be broken. The idea of Church and McTaggart‐Cowan to print only abstracts for general distribution is good. It will speed up information flow and reduce the amount of superfluous printed matter that the individual scientist must file

It has been my privilege over the past two years to communicate with the AGU membership through these pages. This communication has resulted in a variety of comments from readers. Some have been favorable, some critical. Most valuable have been those with suggestions for improvements.

摘要:
In these times when we are trying to determine our environmental position and the course we are taking, it is desirable to employ every means for assessment available. One such means is to consider measurements of environmental quality that have been maintained over a period of many years. The opportunities for doing this, however, are limited since we have only recently begun to realize fully the importance of monitoring our environment. Thus few environmental records are available for more than a decade.

摘要:
Currently there is much discussion about the state of health of graduate education. There are many complaints that universities are suffering serious consequences as a result of federal fund reductions. This article addresses the university administration and faculty approach to graduate education and the federal funding policy for universities. It also contends that some areas of graduate education are in serious trouble. The rapid reduction in federal funds may overshoot and injure education before it recovers to the proper level. There is an appropriate minimum. Enhanced university graduate education is possible in spite of a reduction in federal funds. A considerable amount of federal funds being given to universities is inappropriate and should be eliminated. The crucial problem is to ensure that available funds are properly utilized. Current university administrative and faculty policies are often injuring those elements that they claim to assist. It does not seem that the academic community is making much real self‐appraisal of the status of graduate educatio
