摘要:
Two Japanese spacecraft, MS‐T5 and Planet‐A, have been launched into interplanetary space with the aim of encountering Comet Halley. The encounters will be March 9 and 11, 1986, for Planet‐A and MS‐T5, respectively. The planned trajectories of the two spacecraft are given in Figure 1. These spacecraft will join the other ships of the so‐called Halley observation “fleet,” including the two VEGA craft, ICE, and European Space Agency's Giotto spacecraft. Together, the Japanese spacecraft will carry a total of fiv

摘要:
It was a wet December for most of the nation's streams, highlighted by a record high flow of the Mississippi River, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Flow of the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Miss., averaged 765 billion gallons per day (bgd) during the month, the highest December flow in 58 years of record keeping. The previous record high for December was 741 bdg in 1982.The Mississippi, St. Lawrence, and Columbia rivers, which drain more than half of the conterminous United States, serve as a general indicator of the status of the nation's surface water resources. The combined flow of these “Big Three” rivers for December was 987 bgd, which was 86% more than the long‐term December av

摘要:
The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) is accepting applications for the 1987–1988 Fulbright Scholar Awards. More than 300 grants in research and 700 grants in university lecturing are available for periods ranging from 3 months to a full academic year, with openings in more than 100 countries and some opportunities for research in more than one country.Fulbright awards are granted in virtually all disciplines. Scholars of all academic ranks, including retired faculty and independent scholars, are eligible to apply. Fulbright scholars must be U.S. citizens with a Ph.D. or comparable professional qualifications, have university or college teaching experience, and, for selected assignments, be proficient in a foreign languag

摘要:
Rapid advances in the understanding of fundamental geologic processes have been achieved, in part, through the use of marine multichannel seismic (MCS) reflection techniques over the past decade. Academic MCS studies have provided new insights into the formation and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere by revealing, in a few places, magma chambers under oceanic spreading centers and by documenting major crustal thinning under fracture zones in the western Atlantic. At rifted continental margins, MCS data have greatly advanced studies of the deep structure and evolution of sedimentary basins and the development of sedimentary sequences and their relation to paleoenvironments and eustatic sea level changes. At convergent margins, MCS data have provided critical information on the development of modern for‐earcs and accretionary wedges that are the submarine analogues of the fold and thrust belts of ancient orogenic belt
