摘要:
The Valles‐Toledo caldera complex is famous as the site of early research on caldera formation and for its caldera‐hosted, high‐temperature geothermal system. Scientific drilling in the west half of the complex, sponsored by the Office of Basic Energy Services of the Department of Energy (DOE), is part of a long‐term program to answer basic questions about caldera formation processes, silicic volcanism, high‐temperature hydrothermal systems, and volcanogenic ore bodies.A DOE workshop to evaluate the drilling was held October 18–20, 1989, in Los Alamos, N. Mex.; about 50 scientists came. The purpose was to review the progress of research and to consider the scientific merit of continuing corehole drilling as proposed in the original scientific management plan [Goff and Nielson,1986]. At the end of the first day, a long discussion was held to determine if results so far justified the expense of continuing the program. The answer was unequivocal: Yes. The next question was, Where should the next corehole

摘要:
The College of Engineering at Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., has named Fred J. Molz to the newly created Elton Z. and Lois G. Huff Eminent Scholar Chair in the Department of Civil Engineering. Molz has been a member of AGU since 1968 and has served on the Hydrology Section's Groundwater Committee.

摘要:
For Washington, D.C., inhabitants or anyone planning a trip to the area, interesting information on the hydrology, geology, and natural and cultural history is available. To provide geographic and historical background for field trips in the area, a book was published for the 28th International Geological Congress, held in Washington in July 1989.Geology, Hydrology, and History of the Washington, D.C. Area, edited by John E. Moore of the U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Va., and Julia A. Jackson of the American Geological Institute, Alexandria, Va., describes such interesting items as the Washington Canal, which ran from the Potomac River to the Capitol and is now Constitution Avenue, and the Cabin John Aqueduct, where a 297‐foot granite arch was the longest masonry arch in the world for 40 years. The aqueduct has carried water to Washington since 1863. The 114‐page book contains many historic photographs and maps and can be purchased from the American Geological Institute, 4220 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22302‐1507, tel. 703‐3

摘要:
Because the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) decided to extend the mission lifetime of the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO), the agency is starting a guest investigator program for GRO, to get the most out of the onboard instruments.GRO is a satellite that will be launched from the space shuttle in a nominal 450 km circular orbit with an inclination of 28.5°. Deployment is scheduled for November 1990. The aim is to obtain observations of astronomical gamma rays from 50 keV to 30 GeV for such studies as formation of the elements, particle acceleration in the Sun, stars and steller systems, origin of the cosmic diffuse background, and the origin and evolution of the universe itself. After 20 days of checkout, GRO will spend 15 months doing an all‐sky survey before the 12‐month Phase 1 Guest Investigator Program be

摘要:
The influence of seafloor topography on ocean circulation has long been a subject of research and speculation. Recent attention to this topic has shown that the interaction with currents is both more complicated and (possibly) more influential than may have been supposed. An important question is whether inadequate representation of topographic effects in numerical ocean models may be a significant source of model infidelity. On the other side, direct observation of momentum exchange between the ocean and variations of seafloor elevation remains a daunting challenge. To focus on these and related issues and to consider possible avenues for future research, the workshopTopographic Stresswas held January 23–25, 1989, at Keahou Bay, Kona, Hawaii, drawing on numerical modelers, oceanic observers, theorists, atmospheric scientists and laboratory modeler

摘要:
The international Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and the Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany (KTB) are large exploration projects in which core‐calibrated borehole measurements play an important scientific role. In the organizations that run both projects, separate working groups are responsible for planning the borehole logging program, supervising the downhole operations, stimulating the research and development of interpretation methods, and initiating new tool designs and developments. These groups came together September 13–15, 1989, for a meeting at the KTB drill site laboratory in Windischeschenbach, Oberpfalz, FRG. Conveners were Ralph Hänel (NLfB, Hannover, FRG) and Paul F. Worthington (BP Research Centre, Sunbury‐on‐Thames, U.K.) About 50 scientists attended. They agreed that integrated working groups be established, through which the two programs could collaborate even more closely in borehole

摘要:
The candidates for this year's AGU election were all outstanding individuals and each would have served the Union well. The participation of all the candidates is an example of the kind of volunteerism that makes AGU strong. The new officers should be both congratulated and helped in meeting their responsibilities.
