摘要:
Hundreds of fires were set in Los Angeles following the verdict of Rodney G. King versus the Los Angeles Police Department on April 29, 1992. These fires were of sufficient intensity and extent to be imaged at 1‐km resolution by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) aboard the polar‐orbiting satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (seeVanWoert et al.[1992] for an overview of the characteristics of the AVHRR instrument). Here we present a thermal infrared image taken the first night of the riots, compare it with an image taken several years earlier but typical of this area, and discuss the relationships with the land cover observed in a 20‐m resolution image from the French satellite SPOT (Systeme Probatoire pour l'Observation de la T

摘要:
The existing network of worldwide ground‐based observatories provides long‐term, high‐accuracy measurements essential to science and technological applications. However, many of these observatories are facing severe difficulties, especially those in developing countries and parts of the former Soviet Union. There are no easy solutions to this problem. A long‐term solution will involve assessment of critical observatory needs by the international community and identification of possible ways to provide a stable operating mode for these observatories. Following the defeat of a motion made at the August 1991 IUGG General Assembly in Vienna to charge for the use of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field and use the proceeds to aid needy observatories (seeEOS, Nov. 5, 1991), the International Association for Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) has begun an investigation of potential long‐term

摘要:
During the last several years, while civil war raged in Lebanon, the Bhannes seismograph station near Beirut continued to operate and provide seismograms and phase readings on a regular basis.Seismologists around the world owe gratitude to Charles Tabet, an employee of both the Lebanon National Council for Scientific Research (NCSR) and the American University of Beirut, for his daily dedication to maintaining the station's operations. In addition, Iskandar Sursock, also of the NCSR, has provided essential support and personal resources to continue the seismological program in Lebanon.

摘要:
The 1992 AGU Fall Meeting, which was held in San Francisco from December 7 to 11, continued the pattern of Fall Meeting growth and was the largest AGU meeting held to date. For the first time in several years, the meeting was held under one roof in the Civic Auditorium and Brooks Hall. Approximately 4571 papers (oral and poster) were presented and more than 6200 geophysicists registered for the meeting—an increase of 11% in paper presentations and 12% in registrations.Holding the meeting under one roof has been an objective for some time. This year, through judicious use of space and a more effective organization of poster sessions, it was achieve

摘要:
The American Geophysical Union will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 1994. To help commemorate this milestone year, a committee was appointed to suggest and coordinate a variety of activities and celebrations throughout the anniversary year.Since 1990, the 75th Anniversary Committee has been laying the groundwork for this year‐long celebration. The committee is working closely with the Meetings Committee, the Publications Committee, the Education and Human Resources Committee, the History of Geophysics Committee, and other committees and AGU staff to ensure Union‐wide involvement in anniversary activities. According to Tom Graedel, chairman of the 75th Anniversary Committee, “AGU will make new commitments to activities in support of geophysics during the anniversary year while the Union enjoys a well‐earned celeb
