The history of the discovery of the earth's liquid core and its role in geophysics is briefly reviewed. Among the core's still undetermined properties is the extent to which its density gradient departs from an adiabat, as characterized by the Brunt‐Vaisala frequency. Since this parameter must affect the eigenfrequencies of the hitherto unobserved inertia‐gravity wave segment of the earth's normal mode spectrum, considerable effort has gone into theoretical studies of these core oscillations over the past decade. We relate these studies to those of internal gravity and Rossby waves in oceanography. Ed Hones is a senior staff member in the Space Plasma Physics Group within the Earth and Space Sciences Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos, N.Mex.). He has been at Los Alamos since 1965; prior to that time he was at DuPont, Wilmington, Del. (1951–1959), the Convair Corporation, San Diego, Calif. (1959–1961), the Institute of Defense Analysis, Washington, D.C. (1961–1964), and the University of Iowa, Iowa City (1964–1965). Ed's undergraduate degree was in engineering from Duke University (Durham, N.C.) in 1943, after which he served several years in the Navy. He then returned to Duke for graduate studies, receiving his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering

Space plasma physics research at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is administered by the Space Plasma Physics Branch of the Earth Science and Applications Division of the Office of Space Science and Applications at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The general goal of the space plasma research program is to understand the fundamental properties of space plasmas and the complex interactive processes that control the environments of the earth, the planets, and the sun (processes in which plasmas play a significant role), including the processes associated with plasma flow throughout the interplanetary medium. In May 1982, the AGU Council approved the following policy on the Union's role in advocacy on public issues.The American Geophysical Union is an association of scientists, scholars, and interested lay public for the purpose of advancing geophysical science. The Union shares a collateral sense of responsibility to assure that the results of geophysical research are made available to benefit all mankind. The Union encourages its members to exercise their individual sense of responsibility in addressing political and social issues. Should they choose to act collectively on such issues, other organizations exist for such purposes. The American Geophysical Union, as a society, should preserve its unique position as an objective source of analysis and commentary for the full spectrum of geophysical science. Accordingly, the following policies should guide the American Geophysical Union's role as an advocate:

AGU will pay tribute to the 1987 Medalists and Fellows on Wednesday, May 20, at the Honors Ceremony, Reception, and Banquet. The William Bowie Medal, the John Adam Fleming Medal, the Charles A. Whitten Medal, and one of the James B. Macelwane medals will be presented at the ceremony, which begins at 5:45 P.M. in the Hyatt Hotel in Baltimore, Md. Also to be honored at the ceremony, which is the most important social function at the Spring Meeting, are those newly elected Fellows (see Eos, April 7, 1987, p. 205) who will be attending. The Walter H. Bucher Medal, the Harry H. Hess Medal, the Maurice Ewing Medal, and two James B. Macelwane medals will be presented at the AGU 1987 Fall Meeting.
