摘要:
International efforts to establish several data bases for paleomagnetic and rock‐magnetic data (Table 1) are being coordinated by Working Groups I‐3 (Paleomagnetism) and I‐4 (Rock Magnetism) of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA). The initiative came from widespread concerns over the need to provide archival and access facilities for the ever‐growing body of paleomagnetic and rock‐magnetic data. This article follows an earlier account of the development of the IAGA paleomagnetic data bases [Barton, 1991] and outlines their curre

摘要:
When it came to selecting a new space station design, President Clinton's decision was truly multiple choice: he has chosen to combine two of the three design options presented to him by NASA officials and forge a new space station that is smaller and simpler than the much‐criticized Space StationFreedom.Announcing his compromise decision on June 17, Clinton opted to blend options A and B, the two versions most similar toFreedom. LikeFreedom, the new station will be centered on a long truss with solar panels at each end with science, habitation, and other modules in the middle. The design is essentially that of Option A, known as the “Power Station”; Option B, which most closely reflects theFreedomdesign, was slightly larger, more complex, and expe

摘要:
Regarding George Reid's article on solar variations and climate change (Eos, January 12, 1993), we note the ongoing controversial discussion between two groups of scientists on the existence of the so‐called Maunder‐Minimum. One group includes research bySilverman[1992] andEddy[1976]. The second includes scientists whose papers we consider more “critical,” for example,Landsberg[1980],Gleissberg[1977],Legrand et al. [1993], andSchroder[1984]. By critical papers, we mean those that cite more original literature and present a more objective investigation of solar‐terrestrial variability [cf., Legrand et al., 1990]. We suggest that some authors overlook critical papers; for example, none were cited bySilver

摘要:
The Ocean Drilling Program, a consortium of countries led by the United States, with a broad mandate to drill in the world's oceans, has set the direction of its drilling vessel for the next 4 years. During the various upcoming legs, researchers will address some of the themes considered to be high priority by ODP's advisory panels and will develop the drilling technology to achieve these goals.Scheduled legs of the ODP program include:Leg 150, New Jersey Sea Level, May 30– July 25, 1993. The primary objectives are to determine the geometry and age of Oligocene to Miocene depositional sequences and evaluate the role of relative sea‐level changes in developing this record. The drilling will consist of a transect across the continental slope and r

摘要:
The reviewers whose photographs appear below have been cited by editors of AGU's journals for excellence in refereeing. The editor's citation recognizes this special service to the Union, and the individuals listed below are to be commended for consistently providing constructive and thoughtful reviews. They were recognized at the Spring Meeting in Baltimore, Md. Some of the editors cited appeared in the June 15 issue of Eos.
