摘要:
The solar system got a little bigger last year. The discovery of the distant object 1992 in an orbit beyond Pluto extended the dimensions of the planetary system and provided important evidence for several hypotheses about the origin of the solar system and the source of short‐period comets. The new object was found by David Jewitt of the University of Hawaii and Jane Luu of the University of California, Berkeley, who had spent more than 5 years in the search. On August 30, using the 2.2‐m University of Hawaii telescope on Mauna Kea, they detected a slow‐moving, 23rd magnitude object in Pisces. The initial observations suggested a distance of 41 AU. At that distance, if one assumed a typical comet nucleus albedo of 0.04, the object would have to be about 200 km in diameter [Jewitt and Luu,

摘要:
We all know that the process of reviewing scientific papers, research proposals, or books is a royal pain for everybody. The reviewers have better things to do, the editors are in a perennial state of nervous collapse trying to get reviews back in time, and the reviewees risk heart attacks each time they scan the obviously unfair reviews of their work. The reviewing of research proposals is particularly daunting because money, often in large amounts, is involved. In fact, it is so daunting that it has attracted the Congressional eye (Science, 1992, vol. 156, p. 959). To placate Congress and alleviate internal tensions within the granting agencies, I have proposed the adoption of the “Absolute Review System” (ARS). In this system, the principal investigator (P.I.) does the reviewing. As I discussed in a recent article in theJournal of Irreproducible Results(1992, vol. 37, p. 12), the advantages are colos

摘要:
A critical review of past efforts in space physics underscores the importance of incorporating three important concepts in developing a strategy for progress during the next decade. These three approaches are suggested in an effort to study the magnetosphere and geospace environment generally as a vast three‐dimensional system. The discipline of space physics was born after the advent ofSputnik. The subsequent growth of the discipline took different courses in different countries. In Europe and Japan, many researchers in the traditional disciplines of geomagnetism, aeronomy, and ionospheric physics contributed to the birth and growth of space physics. Thus, early in, its development, they devoted their efforts to ground‐based observations. U.S. physicists became the main force in establishing and developing space physics and played a major role primarily through satellite‐based observations. In the former Soviet Union, researchers from the traditional disciplines closely collaborated with physi

摘要:
Durk Jakob Doornbos was born in Groningen, The Netherlands, on April 1, 1943. He died on April 27, 1993, after a bicycle accident in Oslo that same day.He graduated from the University of Groningen in 1965 and received his Doctorate in Geophysics (cum laude) from the University of Utrecht in 1974. He served as a senior lecturer there until 1980, when he moved to the NORSAR Institute in Kjeller, Norway, as a senior scientist. In 1985, he was appointed professor of physics of the solid Earth in the Department of Geophysics at the University of Oslo, the first in this discipline at the university.
