摘要:
The dichotomy in science education, the development of specialized or interdisciplinary scientists, is also a dilemma for the science administrator when he attempts to form an effective scientific staff. Proponents each school of thought find numerous examples to support their point of view. Yet, it is the cross‐fertilization of knowledge, whether provided by the interdisciplinarian or by interdisciplinary‐oriented specialists with a need to solve common problems, and not technical or scientific tubular vision that has produced the quantum jumps in science and technology. This interchange between specialists is certainly evident in the history of geodesy; but as the applicable science and technology progressed, new actors emerged to play the leading ro

摘要:
The Gordon Research Conferences, international symposia on significant developments in the most active areas of basic research, will hold 77 sessions this summer. Scheduled to open June 12, the conferences will be held at seven sites in New Hampshire and Wisconsin and will continue through September 1.The meetings, each devoted exclusively to a single subject, are limited to about 100 participants and last one week each.

Unesco occasionally has vacancies of possible interest to geophysicists. The minimum qualifications for these field posts are, generally, a higher university degree as well as several years of professional experience in a position of responsibility.

摘要:
The Second International Symposium in Hydrology will be held September 11–13, 1972, at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. The symposium will cover floods, droughts, and decision‐making with inadequate hydrologic data. The first two topics of the symposium, floods and droughts, will critically review existing concepts and methodologies used in water resources applications, and will introduce new ideas, concepts, and methods to solve problems. The third topic, decision making with inadequate hydrologic data, is important because inadequate data are the rule rather than the exception. Old and new methods of decision‐making with inadequate data will be exa

摘要:
The Geodesy/Solid‐Earth and Ocean Physics research conferences are established to stimulate interdisciplinary research in the fields of geodesy, solid‐earth and ocean physics within universities, research foundations, industrial and governmental organizations. This is to be achieved by an informal type of meeting consisting of invited speakers and a discussion panel supplemented by a small number of contributing speakers, when sufficient time is available to stimulate discussion among the members of each conference. This type of meeting is a valuable means of disseminating information and ideas to an extent that could not be achieved through the usual channels of publication and presentation at scientific meetings. In addition, scientists in these related fields become acquainted, and valuable associations are formed that often result in collaboration and cooperative effo

摘要:
The cooperation of Denmark, Finlad, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden during the IHD has been one of the highlights of the many regional activities initiated by the program. These Nordic countries (Scandinavia is limited to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) have a long, although not uninterrupted, history of cooperation, many strong ethical and cultural bonds, and no serious language barriers. Moreover, a natural basis for cooperation exists among the three northern mainland countries because of common river basins and physiographic and ecological regions.

摘要:
At its eleventh meeting, the United States National Committee for the IHD concentrated on steps to bring U.S. participation in the Decade to a successful orderly finish at the end of 1974 and began to consider an appropriate U.S. response to proposals for post‐Decade activities in international hydrology. (See the following report on the Seventh Session of the Coordinating Council in thisIHD Bulletin.) James J. Geraghty chaired the session in the absence of H. Garland Hershey, the Chairman of the committe

摘要:
The Seventh Session of the Coordinating Council approved the post‐Decade International Hydrological Program (IHP) presented by an ad hoc Working Group of eight member nations and suggested that a Council, similar to the existing one, be initiated to implement the IHP, starting on January 1, 1975.In addition, the Council passed nine resolutions dealing with its Working Groups, and one each concerned with its enlarged membership, the preparation of a history of the IHD, the intensification of regional coordination among National Committees, and the need for greater support for technical assistance mission

摘要:
The recent high level of interest in the hydrology of fractured, and particularly fractured carbonate, rocks was again demonstrated at the 1971 annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. A field conference, which dealt with the hydrogeology and land‐use problems in fractured carbonate rocks in south‐central Pennsylvania, was conducted on October 30–31, and a Symposium on the Hydrology of Fractured Rocks was held on November 1 in Washington, D.C.Both events were initiated by the U.S./IHD Work Group on the Hydrology of Carbonate Terranes (V.T. Stringfield, Chairman) as complementary parts of a single, over‐all presentation of current thinking in the hydrology of fracture
