摘要:
Hillslope hydrologists have long assumed that the downslope movement of water and solutes can best be described by surface topography since gravitational potential largely dominates hydraulic gradients in steep terrain. Hence with the increased availability of Digital Terrain Maps (DTMs), surface topography is driving many popular hydrological models and is being used to estimate flow pathways in hydrological and geochemical models. This method may suffice at the catchment scale, but at the hillslope scale, flow pathways are not always determined by surface topography. It is at this critical scale (100–10,000 m2) that water flux and the chemical composition of soil water and groundwater can be measured as they move downslope. The complex interactions between water and solutes along hillslope subsurface flow paths have not been well documented. New evidence suggests that for steep hillslopes with thin soils, the fundamental control on hillslope flow paths is the bedrock surfac

摘要:
The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is seeking proposals by January 15, 1997, for its next cycle of scientific projects.Started in February 1996 as a joint program between Germany's GeoForschungsZentrum‐Potsdam, the United States' National Science Foundation (NSF), and China's Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, ICDP was created to support scientific research of global importance that requires access to continental drilling capability. ICDP is currently funding projects to drill volcanic sequences in Hawaii and the Chicxulub Impact Crater in the Yucatan Peninsula. The program also is supporting workshops on lake drilling for high‐resolution records of environmental and tectonic change; drilling the high‐pressure metamorphic rocks of the Dabieshan Mountains in China; and drilling the feeder of the dacite dome that has intruded into the vent of the Unzen Volcano in

摘要:
Russell Watson Raitt, pioneering marine field geophysicist, AGU Fellow, and emeritus professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, died March 6, 1995, in La Jolla, Calif., where he had lived for more than 50 years. His passing at age 87 closed a life of scholarship, innovation, and accomplishment that produced much of the observational foundation upon which the field that became plate tectonics is based.Raitt was born September 30, 1907, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of a Presbyterian minister. He moved to southern California in 1921 and graduated from South Pasadena High School. In 1925 he entered the nearby California Institute of Technology, from which he graduated with a B.S. in physics in 1929.

摘要:
Located near the boundary of the India, Pacific, and Eurasia plates, the Chinese continent is characterized by complex tectonics and high seismicity. Since the Sino‐U.S. cooperative China Digital Seismograph Network (CDSN) began operating 10 years ago, it has played an active role in studying the seismology of China.Studies of the lithospheric structure and earthquake sources using digital seismic data are highly important in the study of geodynamics and the reduction of seismic disasters. Using the CDSN data, extensive studies were carried out by seismologists both in China and abroad. The studies investigated the lithospheric structure, seismic anisotropy within the upper mantle, and inversion of regional centroid moment tensors (RCMTs) of moderate to strong earthquakes. Earthquake sources were imaged based on broadband digital waveform analysis. As a result, over 100 papers have been published in China and abroad since 199

摘要:
Nominations for the Alan T. Waterman award are now being accepted. This award goes to an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Presented by the NSF and the National Science Board, the award is named in honor of the first director of the National Science Foundation. The 1997 award consists of a citation, a bronze medal, and a grant of $500,000 over a 3‐year period for scientific research or study at the institution of the recipient's hoic
