摘要:
Scientists working on the ocean floor have a new sea bottom home in Aquarius, the advanced habitat launched in November 1987 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Aquarius has been placed on the seafloor in Salt Water Canyon off St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and is expected to remain there for 1 o r 2 years. During that time, teams of six scientists will be able to live in the habitat and work on the seafloor for up to 9 hours each day. Aquarius, which houses labs, sleeping quarters, and a galley in its 13 × 3.6 × 5‐meter space, cost NOAA $5.5 mill

摘要:
Around the world there are many high‐pressure devices coupled to synchrotron radiation sources. Of these facilities, MAX80 (for multianvil high‐pressure X ray system) at the Photon Factory (the synchrotron radiation laboratory at the National Laboratory for High‐Energy Physics in Tsukuba, Japan ) has a unique capability for experiments that are simultaneously high pressure and high temperature. Because of MAX80's large sample chamber, a resistance heater can be installed so that the specimen can be heated uniformly to 1600°C at pressure. Scientists have employed this apparatus for in situ X ray observations of phase transitions, measurements of silicate melts, and other high‐pressure exp

摘要:
International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP) Project 199, which was begun in 1984 under the enthusiastic leadership of Kenneth Hsu (Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich), held its second working session in Beijing, March 3–5, 1987. The meeting was held at the invitation of Sun Shu, Director of the Bureau of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Academia Sinica; Xu Dao‐Yi, Institute of Geology, State Seismological Bureau, and Sun Yi‐Ying (Freddie), Institute of Geology, Academia Sinica. The scientific sessions were followed by a field excursion to the Permian‐Triassic boundary in Changxing area. Throughout the meetings and excursion, the organization and opportunities for interaction were superb. Sixteen foreign delegates from nine countries met with 47 of their Chinese colleagues and learned a great deal from them. All of us had been aware that a lot of research was going on in China on the geology, paleontology, and geochemistry of event stratigraphy, but I believe that few if any of us had realized the scale and variety of research that is currently being advanced in every corner of this vast country and throughout the whole of the Phanerozoic stratigraphic

摘要:
This is only the second time that the Harry H. Hess Medal has been awarded. This award is given for “outstanding achievement in research in the constitution and evolution of Earth and sister planets.” The fundamental building blocks of Earth and its nearest siblings are rocks and minerals. Julian Goldsmith's scientific life has been dedicated to understanding, on a fundamental level, how minerals behave, in order that we may better comprehend how Earth as a whole beha

摘要:
The authors have tackled the challenging task of leading the reader from elementary geophysics to numerical climate impact studies in six easy lessons, complete with reference to three desk‐top computer programs for geophysical fluid models that can be acquired at an affordable price. As a result, they have produced a quickly moving text that provides a far‐ranging overview of a vast and rapidly advancing field in Earth system scien
