The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Consortium has produced an ambitious plan for new seismological research facilities to be developed during the coming decade. The plan reflects a broad consensus among seismologists in this country with respect to both the need for improved data and the potential for significant scientific advances that can occur as a result. The three elements of this program are a 100‐station broadband global network utilizing satellite telemetry, a 1000‐station portable network of advanced digital seismographs, and a national center for management and distribution of the data generated by these networks to the research community. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released an announcement of opportunity for U.S. scientists to participate in the High Energy Solar Physics (HESP) program, sponsored by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) of Japan. ISAS plans to launch the HESP mission into low‐earth orbit on a Japanese spacecraft in the early 1990s.The HESP mission will aim to advance the understanding of high‐energy phenomena on the sun through X ray and gamma ray observations, according to NASA. The field of environmental chemistry is broad and multidisciplinary, with ill‐defined boundaries. The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry series is a useful compilation that has attempted, through several parts of three volumes, to meet the needs of the diverse environmental science community by presenting reviews of topics directly germane to the discipline as well as topics situated along disciplinary borders. The objectives of the series are to present a uniform view of the chemistry of the environment, to discuss the distribution of chemical reactions and the equilibrium between environmental compartments, to aid in the understanding and development of tests and models to predict the fate of new chemicals, and to present the properties of selected important compounds. Volume 1 deals with characteristics of the natural environment and the biogeochemical cycles. Part D, reviewed here, is divided into four chapters: the cycles of copper, silver, and gold; modeling the global carbon cycle; chemical limnology; and environmental microbiology.
