摘要:
An earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred September 19, 1985, at 9:18 A.M. (EDT), near the coast of Mexico. The quake, centered about 400 km southwest of Mexico City, was the strongest in the world since one of the same magnitude struck near the coast of central Chile on March 3, said the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). As Eos went to press, it was reported that 250 people had been killed in the Mexican earthquake. A regional tsunami warning issued on the morning of the earthquake was cancelled a few hours later.According to John Filson, chief of earthquake studies at the USGS headquarters in Reston, Va., the quake was centered near the northern end of the Middle America Trench, located off the west coast of Mexico and Central America.
