摘要:
The scientific investigations of the Jupiter‐Saturn missions are multipurpose, taking data in a variety of environments. For example, the ultraviolet spectrometer studies planetary and satellite atmospheres and also interplanetary and interstellar hydrogen and helium. The magnetic fields experiment will examine the magnetospheres of the planets and also search for the transition between solar and galactic regions. It is difficult to separate ‘planetary’ from ‘interplanetary’ instruments and investigations. There is, however, another

摘要:
The Arthur L. Day Fund, administered by the National Academy of Sciences, provides one of the few available sources of grants‐in‐aid for foreign collaborators of U.S. geophysicists. U.S. scientists directly involved in programs of geophysical studies in other countries may apply for modest grants to support studies by their collaborators abroad. Expenditures will be under the general guidance and control of the U.S. investigator, who must certify that the money is spent in accordance with the guidelines for the Day Fund. Applications and requests for information should be sent to Office of the Home Secretary, National Academy of Sciences, NAS‐247, Washington, D.C. For further information, contact V. Crawford, 202‐3

摘要:
There is some confusion concerning what is meant by a quantitative model. This is caused primarily by the existence of a wide variety of model users. Quantitative models may be purely empirical (based solely on data sets), semiempirical (relying on physics whenever appropriate and available but the ‘gaps’ being filled in with data as necessary), or physical (based on the physics of the processes). Most quantitative modeling efforts at this point in time are semiempirical, which is partly because the physics of the magnetosphere is not yet entirely understood. At the same time, however, there is a large user community that needs models which can accurately describe magnetospheric features. The preponderance of semiempirical models results from the fact that current data sets describing various magnetospheric features and processes are limi

摘要:
Several horizontal control surveys, which have been made to support engineering activities, can be used for crustal movement studies. These might be called ‘Surveys of Opportunity.’ An example is the horizontal control network of Los Angeles County. The time span is more than 50 yr with many repeated surveys, including an extensive resurvey after the San Fernando earthquake of 1971. R. J. Mitchell, L.A. County Engineer, in charge of the survey activities, has recommended an overall resurvey before it is incorporated into the new North American 1983 Da
