摘要:
During the last decade the oceanography community has focused much attention on the Mediterranean Sea. One reason for the growing interest is that the Mediterranean's impact on the Northern Atlantic Ocean is more significant than previously realized. The warm, salty Mediterranean water tongue exits the Gibraltar Straits and spreads throughout the North Atlantic at all depths between 1000 and 2500 m. The second reason for the surge in interest is the well‐recognized role of the Mediterranean Sea as a laboratory for studying ocean processes that are important in global climate dynamics [Malanotte‐Rizzoli and Robinson,1991;Malanotte‐Rizzoli and Robinson,

Clair C. (Pat) Patterson, 73, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Sea Ranch, Calif., on December, 5, 1995. Pat left behind one of the most prolific and influential legacies, not only in geochemistry, but in environmental biogeochemistry as well. In geochemistry, he is best known for first establishing the true age of the Earth and solar system at 4.6 billion years, a date the accuracy of which has survived four decades. This inherently accurate geochronology arose from Pat's development of stable lead isotope techniques clean enough to overcome contaminated and erroneous results of earlier workers. This allowed him to further develop lead isotope systematics for divulging the evolution of the crust and mantle.

National laboratories are indeed engaged in many educational activities, particularly those with close connections to universities. These activities are especially strong where they are linked to unique facilities or programs, which many are. The NRC report urges greater discipline in assessing their quality and role in education and training, but those institutions that have maintained high quality and that do indeed help educate the next generation about science and technology would fare well under the kind of review proposed. The report urges that federal laboratories focus on mission requirements. It also recommends that federal funding “generally favor” academic institutions. To the extent that some national laboratories function as “academic institutions” in the senses noted in the report, they should not only survive, but prosper. A few clarifications may be

The field of ultra‐high pressure metamorphism (UHPM) emerged only 12 years ago when microscopic relics of coesite were found in crustal rocks that had been metamorphosed during subduction related to continental collision.
