摘要:
Oliver H. Gish, age 103, a noted geophysicist, died peacefully in Athens, Ga., on February 22, 1987. Gish, son of John E. Gish and Fannie R. Herr, was born on a farm near Abilene, Kan., on September 7, 1883. He was a descendent of Matthias Gish, who emigrated from Germany to Lancaster County, Pa., in 1733. On his mother's side he was descended from Hans Herr who led the first Mennonite Colony which settled in Lancaster County in 1710. In 1878, Gish's grandfather, Benjamin Gish, led a group of Brethren in Christ (River Brethren) from Lancaster County, Pa., to Dickinson County, Kan.

摘要:
Much of the deep ocean's variability at subinertial frequencies is believed to be due to depth‐independent (barotropic) fluctuations, especially in regions devoid of intense mean currents and mesoscale eddies. The significance of this proposition can be seen in the hypothesis that all of the vertical mixing in the deep ocean implied by chemical property distributions is accounted for by mixing at the bottom boundary, followed by lateral advection without any vertical (cross‐isopycnal) diffusion in the interior [e.g., Armi, 1978]. Barotropic currents could provide much of the variability that causes the boundary mixing. The atmosphere, through direct forcing by the surface wind stress, may be the principal energy source for the barotropic field away from boundary currents. This assertion has been difficult to demonstrate for two reasons: the multiplicity of free waves that are generated elsewhere reduces correlations between local oceanic and surface atmospheric variables, and extensive conventional instrumentation (e.g., numerous current meters per mooring) is required to accurately separate the barotropic and depth‐dependent (baroclinic) components. However, at subinertial frequencies, bottom pressure is dominated by the barotropic field, and the horizontal electric field has been shown to be due to a weighted vertical average of horizontal water velocity, effectively eliminating the baroclinic component. These observations, together with the well‐established utility of external source electromagnetic data for inferring the electrical structure of Earth, led to the design of an experiment with dual purposes:first, the estimation of some properties of barotropic fluctuations in a region of the mid‐latitude North Pacific that has weak mean currents and an unenergetic surface eddy field but in which significant barotropic currents are expected to be directly forced by surface winds, andsecond, the investigation of the electrical conductivity structure of the oceanic li

摘要:
More than a decade has passed since the very successful 1971 meeting on the coremantle interface that was organized by Allan Cox at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne [Cox and Cain, 1972]. The rationale of that meeting was to bring together workers in several different disciplines that normally do not interact at scientific gatherings. In recognition of the facts that significant advances in our understanding of Earth's deep interior have taken place since that time but that there is yet the problem of combining data and theories from disparate geophysical disciplines, a group met during the Prague meeting of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and formed an ad hoc consortium named “ISECALM” (International Study of the Earth's Core and Lower Mantle). One of the principal instigators of this initiative was Ray Hide (U.K. Meteorological Office, Bracknell), who was also instrumental in organizing the 1971 core‐mantle me

摘要:
First, let me say that one should be prepared to purchase two copies of this book. The office copy will be permanently on loan to colleagues and students, while the home copy will be yours for enjoyment and reference. This immensely informative book by the British Etna study group, led by John Guest of University College London, will, I am sure, be very popular. It amply fulfills the authors' aims of synthesizing the results of many published and unpublished multinational studies into a coherent picture of Europe's largest and most active volcano.

摘要:
In my mind's eye I still see Bob Clayton as he was first introduced to me by Sam Epstein, nodding hello from behind an extraction line at Caltech [the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena], where he was a graduate student. After getting his degree in chemistry, Bob went to Penn State [Pennsylvania State University, University Park]for 2 years but was lured to Chicago in 1958 when Harold Urey “retired.” Bob is exceedingly conscientious and more dedicated to excellence in science than anyone I know, and he awed those who may have expected a replacement for Urey by striding along his own new and clearly blazed trails. But Bob does the very best job possible in everything he does; in research, in teaching, in administration, and in service activities, and I'm glad I won't be around to worry about the void he leaves at retirement. Incidentally, I find it awkward in his presence to say anything good about him. He does not engage in small talk and unnecessary speculation and does not express subjective opinions; I fear he will challenge these Clayton‐directed judgments as subjective, irrespective of their laudatory n

摘要:
The fourth biennial meeting of the European Union of Geosciences (EUG) was held in Strasbourg, France, April 13–16, 1987. The very existence of this meeting reflects a major accomplishment in the unification of the Earth sciences in Europe. The meeting is usually held in the Palais des Congres in Strasbourg, which is an excellent, if somewhat overcrowded, facility. Strasbourg itself is an extremely attractive site, with great beauty, outstanding food, and a truly international flavor. French, German, and English are generally understoo

摘要:
The International Marine Science Cooperation Program at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Woods Hole, Mass.) announces its second publication, Marine Scientific Research Boundaries and the Law of the Sea: Discussion and Inventory of National Claims by David A. Ross and Therese A. Landry. The document is in two parts. The first section describes research boundaries and discusses specific articles of the Law of the Sea Treaty that bear on marine scientific research, while the second section is an inventory of the maritime claims by 139 countries.
