摘要:
Regional arrays of seismometers provide a powerful means of mapping the details of deep‐Earth structure. Our understanding of the geological processes at work within our planet depends on our ability to examine them; seismic techniques remain the best tool available. However, spatial aliasing due to the less‐than‐optimal distribution of global seismometers has long made it difficult to determine deep‐Earth structure from teleseismic waves. The temporary deployment of portable broadband seismometers can help by providing high‐resolution windows into the Earth. Patterns of global mantle convection create seismically observable features such as anisotropy at the top and bottom of the mantle, topography of upper mantle discontinuities, and heterogeneous structure at the core‐mant

摘要:
Three months after its launch, Japan's Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) is set to begin day‐to‐day science operations at the end of November. The global change research satellite, launched August 16 from the Tanegashima Space Center by Japan's National Space Development Agency (NASDA), has settled into a circular polar orbit at 800 km altitude. ADEOS includes instruments from Japan, the United States, and France that will observe ocean chlorophyll production, ocean temperature, atmospheric gases, polarization and direction of solar energy reflected by the Earth, and the distribution of vegetat

摘要:
Paul M. Davis is looking forward to carrying on the tradition of excellence that William Hinze and the associate editors have established for his term, which will formally begin January 1997 and end December 2000. He shares in the excitement of discovery as he assists new manuscripts on their path toward publication. “As I take on the reins as new editor, I am in awe of the excellent job done by William Hinze and his staff, and it has become all too clear the debt so many of us owe to Bill,” Davis commen
