摘要:
An Author Produced Program. The deadline for submitting abstracts of papers to be presented at AGU meetings was for many years about three months before the meeting date. Authors are now asked to submit abstracts in good form for reproduction by photo‐offset, thus reducing the time allotted for publishing procedures to 84 days for the present meeting. Since January has 31 days, February has 28 days, and March has 31 days, a simple calculation shows that a full 6 days have been saved thus allowing a much more up‐to‐date abstract. In truth, the author plans to spend the time on the ski slopes acquiring a tan—evidence for which will be pr

摘要:
This era is not the first in which man has become conscious of his impact on nature. There have been recurrent appraisals of this topic in various ages, settings, and contexts. However, the present concern for the environment has, for the first time, placed emphasis on the global nature of the subject. It has also become clear that this problem is so encompassing that no single field can hope to find more than partial solutions. Many fields of science and technology, much sociology and economics, too, are involved in coping with the numerous facets of man's influence on and interaction with the environment. The principal dilemma is to bring about a constructive synthesis of often highly divergent forces.

摘要:
An International Symposium on Electromagnetic Distance Measurement (EDM) and Atmospheric Refraction was held at Boulder, Colorado, June 23–27, 1969. The symposium was arranged by Special Study Groups 19 and 23 of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and was sponsored jointly by the American Geophysical Union and the Environmental Science Services Administration. The ESSA Research Laboratories served as hosts. In the opening address, A. Marussi of the University of Trieste, President of the IAG , expressed the theme of the symposium in the following way: ‘In 1959 the first EDM Symposium was held in Washington. The discussions were helpful to change the mental attitude of geodesists; in fact, it completely revolutionized their way of thinking. It helped us over the step from two‐dimensional to three‐dimensional geodesy, especially with the launching of the first earth satellite i

摘要:
A special summer program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Formulation and Solution of Problems in Water Resources Planning: Engineering Case Studies Illustrating New Techniques, will be held from August 31 through September 4, 1970. This special summer program will use the case study approach to explore the systematic formulation and solution of several real problems in water resources planning and management. The problems, concerning community water supply, flood control, water quality, regional water use, and project evaluation have been chosen for their illustration of decision‐making in the face of multiple objectives, many alternatives and chance. The program is designed to provide the project leader with an awareness of the power of new analytical methods in application to large‐scale water probl
