摘要:
We need to remind ourselves that the American Geophysical Union serves two separate but related functions. It is a scientific society serving geophysics in the United States and, increasingly, throughout the world. Secondly, the Council of AGU is the U. S. National Committee for the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).For most of us the relationship to AGU, the scientific society, is the more familiar one through the publications, committee activities, and national and regional meetings. But once every three or four years hundreds of us find good reason and financial support to attend meetings of our international counterpart, the IUGG. Such a General Assembly was held in Switzerland from September 25 to October 7, 1967, and I would like to share with you some highlights and reflections. More complete reports will appear in theTransactionsand in other places.

摘要:
The death of Dr. Lloyd V. Berkner in Washington, D. C., on June 4, 1967, brought deep sadness to the world of science and to all who knew him. Death occurred from a heart attack suffered the previous day while attending a meeting of the Council of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.Dr. Berkner joined the American Geophysical Union in 1934. He became increasingly prominent in several Sections of the Union, and in the natural course of events he became Vice President from 1956 to 1959, President from 1959 to 1961, and a member of the AGU Council from 1956 through 1964. Even after official retirement he continued his service to the Union. Thus, his sage advice and inspiring influence through many years have contributed importantly to our growth as a broad‐based geophysical societ

摘要:
We introduce this new feature of Transactions in the belief that it will fill the need for an ‘open forum’ in which the responsible ideas, thoughts, and critiques of geophysicists may be published and read. We are hopeful that it will be used for comment on the social, economic, and political aspects of geophysics, as well as for strictly scientific comment. We earnestly request your contributions. The success of this feature will depend on the response of the read

摘要:
Is the preface the author says, “The reader toward whom this book is specifically directed is the space scientist or engineer who is not a specialist in solar physics, but whose work requires a fairly detailed knowledge of the corona. It is my hope, however, that the material will also prove useful to most graduate students in astrophysics, and that my colleagues in solar physics may also find some topics of interest and value to them.” After reading through the book it is this reviewer's opinion that the author's appraisal is accurate. The volume is a concise text on the history, the observational instruments, methods, and conclusions (including observations of the solar X rays, ultraviolet, wind, and the energetic solar particles from balloons and space vehicles) and the theoretical conclusions that have been reached concerning the nature, the origin, and the effects of the solar corona. The book can be read and understood is its entirety by a first‐year graduate student in physics and, with the possible exception of some sections on electromagnetic radiation and quantum mechanics, by an undergraduate. The explanations are generally complete and do not assume prior specialized know

摘要:
The education and training part of the U. S. program for the International Hydrological Decade has made slow but encouraging progress during the past year. The progress has been slow, partly because of the need to reorient some program elements and partly because the Federal activities in the field of international education and training are so extensive that it is a problem to learn what is going on. As part of learning how best to implement the education and training proposals it is necessary first to learn how much of the U.S./IHD program can be met through on‐going educational activities. With that information it will be possible to identify educational needs not being satisfied out of existing programs a
