摘要:
The controversy over where to store nuclear waste in the United States has taken another step forward. In a 14‐5 vote on June 12, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved SI 138, the “Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 1991,” a bill that would give the federal government authority to name the Yucca Mountain, Nev., site as the primary nuclear repository site in the country.Introduced by J. Bennett Johnston (D‐La.) on May 22, SI 138 amends the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to direct the Secretary of Energy to carry out site characterization activities at Yucca Mountain. The bill states that the Secretary must work in consultation with the governor of the state of Nevada “in a manner that minimizes any significant adverse environmental

摘要:
The level of 1990 greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced at relatively low cost, says Thomas Lee, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the committee chair of thePolicy Implications of Greenhouse Warming, Report of the Mitigation Panel. The 500‐page report, released June 14 by the National Academy of Sciences, expands the 17‐page chapter on mitigation fromImplications of Policy Warming, a report of the Synthesis Panel released in April. According to Frank Press, president of NAS, this report will influence people's views and will be important both in the United States and internationally. There are surprises in the report, he says, particularly, that a great deal can be done to lower greenhouse gas emissions at relatively low c

摘要:
Papers are solicited for the AGU Chapman Conference on Climate, Volcanism, and Global Change, to be held March 23–27, 1992, in Hilo, Hawaii. Conference conveners are Stephen Self, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Richard P. Turco, University of California, Los Angeles.Papers should focus on areas related to volcanic eruption dynamics and geochemistry, dispersion and removal of volcanogenic aerosols, effects on the atmosphere and climate, and signatures in sediments, ice cores, and tree rings. The conference will bring together a broad range of geophysicists whose research or interests involve volcanic eruptions and their impact. Results obtained from investigations of the El Chichón 1982 event and its aftermath are of particular interest for sessions dedicated to this specific, well‐documented atmospheric perturba
