摘要:
Meteorological analyses of the legendary March 11–14, 1888, “Blizzard of '88” are reconstructed from original surface weather observations. The analyses depict the meteorological evolution of the blizzard, which devastated much of the northeastern United States with 25–125‐cm snowfall accumulations over a 1–3‐day period, high winds, and bitter cold. As shown by the surface weather charts, the storm was associated with a slow‐moving cyclone that moved northeastward from the Carolinas to near New England and then performed a loop near southern New England before moving east over the Atlantic Ocean. The interaction of the cyclone with a stationary front that extended from the storm center northward through central New England, separating cool, moist maritime air over eastern New England from very cold Canadian air over western New England and the Middle Atlantic states, may have been crucial for the development of heavy snowfall. Since weather forecasters in 1888 were taken by surprise by the development of the storm, speculations are offered whether the advancements in weather prediction techniques and the generation of computer technology that have taken place over the century following the storm could be successful in forecasting a simi

摘要:
Scaling notions are associated with power law spectra, lack of characteristic scales over wide ranges, and the appearance of fractal dimensions and structures. More precisely, a system is said to be scaling (or scale invariant) over a range if the small‐ and large‐scale structures are related by a scale‐changing operation that involves only the scale ratio. These characteristics are common in many areas of geophysics, and when considered under the general rubric of nonlinear variability, constitute a central and indeed unifying aspect of geophysical systems. It was therefore natural to confront theories and experiments on scaling behavior of geophysical f

摘要:
The Magma Energy Technology Program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technology Division is planning to drill a deep exploratory well in Long Valley Caldera, Calif. The objective of the program is to evaluate the engineering feasibility of an advanced geothermal technology, which involves placing a heat exchanger directly into partially molten crustal rock. The researchers' objective for this first deep well is to encounter temperatures of 500°C or to drill to depths of 6–7 km, which‐ever comes first. If it can be verified that partially molten rock exists within the caldera, a later stage in the program will include penetrating that region. Drilling of this first well will begin in September 1988 at a prepared site on the south central region of the resurgent dome. The operational plan provides for drilling to proceed in four stages over 4 y

摘要:
The Space Science Working Group applauds the leadership evident in the February 1988 Presidential Directive on National Space Policy and in the President's proposed NASA budget for fiscal year 1989. The National Space Policy outlines a series of broad goals to guide the planning of ongoing and future U.S. programs in space, including the need “to expand knowledge of the Earth, its environment, the solar system, and the universe,” and “to preserve the United States preeminence in critical aspects of space science.“ Our new space policy is the result of a careful planning process that recognizes the need for immediate action to revitalize the U.S. space science enterprise. For the last several years, and particularly since theChallengeraccident, the SSWG has maintained that this nation must act to correct the serious erosion in the health of U.S. space science. In its testimony to Congress last year the SSWG presented four overarching issues that must be addressed to resolve the present crisis:frequent and assured access to space for scientific exploration, the vitality of the space science infrastructure, particularly at universities, the timely development of advanced technologies, andthe continuing pursuit of new
